Olly Stone's first ball was an absolute jaffa. It has been a good start.

  3. SL 12-1published at 2 overs

    Dickwella 9 Chandimal 0

Olly Stone finally gets to bowl in international cricket, after the rain prevented him on debut. He gets Niroshan Dickwella groping outside off stump from his first delivery, and his extra pace asks a few questions in a decent first over

Slowly but surely the ground is filling up. Huge groups of schoolchildren in immaculate white uniforms have been steadily arriving in the last hour, and Sri Lankan flags around the ground wave to the beat of the brass band that's given us everything from Stevie Wonder to Boney M.

    What a start!

Niroshan Dickwella clips Chris Woakes off his legs for four, and then off the next ball he's down on one knee and flicking the ball over his right shoulder and high over the boundary for another - just a couple of yards short of a maximum.

But then off the final delivery Upul Tharanga gets a thin edge through to Jos Buttler!

    England 278-9

Jason Roy fell to the fourth delivery of the England innings, but at 140-2 with 22 overs left a total of over 300 seemed possible.

Eoin Morgan looked set for a century but fell for 92, caught and bowled off a leading edge by the excellent Lasith Malinga.

Sri Lanka's experienced seamer halted England's momentum with figures of 5-44, but despite his efforts a target of 279 will be a testing one.

Sometime in the 1990s, a Caribbean international one-dayer was organised between St Lucia and Martinique. The location was a beach car park on Martinique. Definitely an uncovered and unprepared wicket.

Lacking players, our daughter (then about 13 and trained at Somerset County Ground) and her Dad were recruited to the Martinique side. Against hulking great St Lucians, our daughter hit a six and more, and got at least one wicket amid scenes of Caribbean appreciation.

She later went on to be captain of Oxford University and the first woman to get a hat trick at Lords (nursery ground) and 53 runs, beating Cambridge. It was the Caribbean car park that made her.

I aimed to get everyone in the squad thinking about the game not only from a personal point of view but also from a tactical point of view. I liked to have people thinking about what we should do next. You never know where the next good idea will come from.

As a player you want the captain's backing. I always felt I should be like a captain. The team needs leaders. The captain has a huge job and can't always do everything. The successful teams I have been have had five or six people with leadership qualities.

On Eoin Morgan's suggestions he would consider dropping himself for the World Cup next year if it benefited the team:

I never scored enough runs. Sometimes it is worse than others. It was worst for me in Australia when I had a very bad time and I was ready to leave myself out. I was talked around by Bob Willis who was vice captain, Ian Botham and others.

It is difficult. I think Morgan is right that it is a real option for a team. If the captain is not contributing enough and the right person is there then he should leave himself out.

Excellent from Malinga but credit to England's last four for seeing out the overs and ratcheting up the score.

I think from where Root and Morgan were, England will be a little bit disappointed that they didn't get 300-plus. They are in the game but I think they will have to bowl well to defend it.

I think England are in the game. They are at the higher end of what previous teams have achieved on this surface. They are definitely in the game. Olly Stone played a really good hand there at the end with Adil Rashid.

There is rain to the south. It is a question of whether it comes and hits us. If we have 20 overs of the Sri Lanka innings then that will be it, we will have a result today. If not then the game will resume tomorrow on the reserve day.
