    Rashid 19 Stone 8

Adil Rashid likes that 'squeezing it away to the boundary past point' shot, and he does it twice in the last two deliveries.

Not the total England looked set for (and that I predicted, wrongly) at one point, but still a testing target for Sri Lanka.

    Rashid 9 Stone 8

England negotiate another good over from Lasith Malinga, who finishes with 5-44. Superb stuff.

Right - what can the last pair do with this final over from Thisara Perera?

Having played against Malinga a lot in the past, the batsman talk about watching the umpire's head. The ball will come out, sometimes even from the other side of the umpire's head to where Malinga is standing because of his action.

    Rashid 7 Stone 7

Olly Stone is on his way with a four through mid-wicket from a Nuwan Pradeep full toss. Lasith Malinga is back - 5-41 with one over to go in his allocation.

You have to hand it to Malinga. He is a maestro of knowing when to bowl that slower ball.

    Dawson b Malinga 4 (Eng 254-9)

The over had been called a ball too early, but after the off-field scorers alerted the umpires, Lasith Malinga returned for the last delivery and promptly castled Liam Dawson by deceiving him with a slow one and striking off stump.

And the celebration was full of meaning too, with a point to the name on the back of the shirt.

  7. Eng 254-8published at 47 overs

    Dawson 4 Rashid 5

It's handy having as a good a batsman as Adil Rashid in at 9, and he squeezes Malinga away for four from leg stump out past point.

England are just stuttering. Now with two wickets remaining they will try and bat out the overs. 265 or 270 will be about par. If they get that they will think they have a chance.

    Woakes lbw b Malinga 5 (Eng 249-8)

Gone! Impact was in line with leg stump. The decision is overturned, and Lasith Malinga has his fourth wicket. Brilliant death bowling from the veteran.

Lasith Malinga claims an lbw as the ball hits Chris Woakes full on the toe. It's not given, but we're going upstairs...

  12. Eng 249-7published at 46 overs

    Woakes 5 Dawson 4

That's a good start from Liam Dawson, hooking Nuwan Pradeep over the keeper and very fine to the boundary, although Lasith Malinga could have done better.

That wicket puts a different complexion on things with Buttler gone.

    Buttler b Pradeep 28 (Eng 245-7)

    Oh dear.

Jos Buttler just looked to be getting going, but then he tries a swipe across the line and loses the middle stump. He might have lost the line of that one - either way, England's innings is subsiding badly.

They wait for ages to check for a no-ball, but the wicket stands and an angry-looking Buttler is replaced by Liam Dawson.

We played a day-nighter in Dambulla and there were thousands of insects in the air. When you were running in to bowl you were running with your mouth shut because you thought one was going to go in your mouth.

It is different. You don't get that at Headingley.

On the back of that Flintoff story - and the tale of a player having to keep a close eye on a snake just beyond the boundary - where's the strangest place you've played cricket?

This ground is surrounded by a jungle. It is a beautiful place, one of the more attractive places we play.

The first time I played there we stayed at a place called the Culture Club which was basically tin shacks in the jungle.

Each night we had monkeys on the roof and Andrew Flintoff had to sleep in someone else's room because he was scared. It was a bit out there.

  19. Eng 239-6published at 45 overs

    Buttler 24 Woakes 4

At last! Jos Buttler goes inside out, picking the leg break to lift Akila Dananjaya over cover for his first four. He then flat-bats it past cover towards the boundary, but Nuwan Pradeep rolls over to make a fine stop on the rope.

That's 12 from the over, and England need that kind of thing from now on in.

It has been a fascinating battle. The weather looks set fair.

The ball has turned a bit. Morgan played excellently, especially the spinners, Root started fluently and then got stuck. He was very frustrated to get out. Something annoyed him and he was very angry when he walked off the field, I don't think just with his wicket.

The game is in the balance. The pitch is not a belter. It is not a high-scoring ground. England will feel like they are in the game.
