    Target 274

England scamper a risky single but there's a misfield and the run out chance is gone.

Dhananjaya de Silva put his hand over his mouth in embarrassment at what he thought was Joe Root's dismissal only to complain loudly when he thought the no ball was on height.

Cue more embarrassment all round when umpire Lyndon Hannibal informed the hosts it was because they had not enough fielders inside the circle.

  3. Not outpublished at 22 overs

    Remarkable.

Joe Root loops a knee-high full toss off a top edge straight to fine leg and starts to depart.

But the square leg umpire Lyndon Hannibal has his hand out to signal a no ball. He's not called it on height but because Sri Lanka didn't have the requisite five men inside the circle.

That's a dreadful error and Root is reprieved.

The flags are fluttering a little more than they were, the sky feels heavier... Is the rain coming?

  5. Eng 112-2published at 22 overs

    Root 22, Morgan 22

Akila responds with a tight over that concedes only two singles.

    DLS par score 93-2

Tidy work from Dhananjaya de Silva in his first over, conceding just four runs from it.

England still ahead on DLS though.

Eeek. It's looking quite dark over one side of the ground in Pallekele.

Morgan looks in tremendous form. Root is nudging and nurdling around. He is playing the anchor role.

It could be raining in the distance but it feels a way away.

At the moment England look in control.

  8. Eng 106-2published at 20 overs

    DLS par score 90-2

Joe Root flicks off his toes and scampers two. Excellent running.

Akila the drops short and Eoin Morgan pulls it over mid-wicket for four. Shot!

The DLS par score for this stage is 90-2 so England are well ahead.

And they need to keep an eye on that score - the groundstaff are gathering as some very dark clouds start to roll in.

  9. Eng 98-2published at 19 overs

    Target 274

Bang! You cannot bowl that in Eoin Morgan's arc.

Amila Aponso pitches it full and England's captain smashes it down the ground over long off for six.

Chris: As a football manager and cricket captain I had a number of players doing both sports. One of my footballers missed out on a cup final by cricking his neck on the morning of the game. To his embarrassment it was while using a drier on his hair!

  11. Eng 88-2published at 18 overs

    Root 13, Morgan 7

Akila Dananjaya strays down leg from round the wicket to the left-handed Eoin Morgan but the England captain unfurls a reverse sweep to fetch the ball from outside leg round the corner for four.

    That is quite some shot.

Three singles elsewhere for the tourists.

It's just got a little bit darker beyond the palm trees flanking the ground to the west. No sign of rain for the time being, but we're keeping a close watch over what might be coming in.

  13. drinks break

    Eng 81-2published at 17 overs

    Target 274

Amila Aponso is back into the attack but he's not being helped by his field. Eoin Morgan finds the gaps with ease and gets his innings under way with two simple singles.

Joe Root also rotates the strike well and England pick up five singles from the over.

    Time for drinks.

  14. Eng 76-2published at 16 overs

Joe Root and Eoin Morgan have been in fine touch on this tour.

This will be a challenge but can they accumulate England up towards their target? And/or ensure their side keep ahead of the required rate in case the rain comes?

Ball tracking delivers three reds, the decision is overturned and off Jason Roy must go.

Akila Dananjaya got the leg-break to pitch on leg stump and straighten, with Roy playing round it.

Not many on the field, least of all the umpire, thought there was too much to that shout but Niroshan Dickwella was certain.

The wicketkeeper has excellent judgment. He convinced captain Dinesh Chandimal to review and his confidence was rewarded.

This looks pretty good unless it is going over the top.

  17. Postpublished at 10:34 British Summer Time 20 October 2018

The fact England jogged a leg bye made you think there wasn't much going for this appeal.

But this looks very close. Jason Roy could well be gone here.

  18. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 15.4 overs

Akila Dananjaya spins a leg-break into Jason Roy's pads and England trot a leg bye.

Meanwhile, Niroshan Dickwella is going spare behind the stumps in appeal.

Not given but Dinesh Chandimal sends it upstairs.

  20. Eng 74-1published at 15 overs

    Target 274

Ah. That's not what's needed for Sri Lanka. Rajitha strays down leg and Roy flings it away for four.

Three singles from the rest of the over as England accumulate with no real risk. The tourists need 200 more runs off 210 balls for victory.
