I used to own a village pub and played for the local team. One Friday night, changing barrels in the cellar I hit my head on a low beam and was knocked unconscious. Ruled out next day due to concussion. Not that it would have made much difference to my batting...

Sri Lanka continue to keep England quiet but the hosts need wickets too.

Roy and Root pick up two singles each.

The clouds are rolling in and are starting to build-up a little bit. We are now focusing on the 20-over mark and where England would need to be with Duckworth-Lewis-Stern.

They would have to be 76-1, 90-2 or 107-3 after 20 overs.

If it does rain England are in command.

  4. Eng 63-1published at 13 overs

    Roy 36, Root 4

Jason Roy drives to mid-on and runs despite picking out the fielder. Gone if it hits...misses. Roy survives.

Kasun Rajitha is using the crease well, jumping wide and causing problems with the ball that angles in and shapes away. Joe Root plays and misses.

Root advances to the last and slaps into the ground and away for a single.

Great stuff from Akila, mixing up his deliveries and limiting England to just two from the over.

  6. Postpublished at 11.1 overs

Akila Dananjaya extracts turn and bounce to get the ball through onto Jason Roy's pads.

Big appeal for lbw but that's not out - clearly going over.

Dinesh Chandimal briefly considers a review but very wisely opts against it.

Not cricket related, bit before a hockey match one Saturday, a chicken flew at me, surprised me and caused me to crick my neck so badly I could only stand by the post and be a goal hanger. Took a while to live that one down.

England just rebuilding a touch after that dismissal and they can only pick up three off Kasun Rajitha's third over.

  9. Eng 54-1published at 10 overs

    Target 274

Joe Root is the new man and gets off the mark with a single off the back foot into the leg side.

I am not sure the third umpire could have been 100% sure that there was not some of the boot behind the line.

Hales st Dickwella b Akila 12 (Eng 52-1)

Gone! Superb work behind the stumps!

It's a cracking delivery first up by Akila Dananjaya too as he gets Alex Hales reaching forward but the ball stays on with the arm and past the outside edge.

Niroshan Dickwella collects and whips off the bails. He was certain he'd got his man, running off in delight.

And replays show Hales dragged his foot out of his crease, with the third umpire determining his toe was on the line as the bails were taken. The line belongs to the umpire and that is out.

It is one of those decisions you could give either way.

  13. Third umpirepublished at 9.1 overs

Now then. Niroshan Dickwella reckons he's stumped Alex Hales off Akila Dananjaya's very first ball.

It fizzed past the outside edge and Hales dragged his foot.

    This is very close.

Akila Dananjaya is into the attack with his mix of offies, leggies and various variations.

Can he be the key man for Sri Lanka today?

  16. Eng 52-0published at 9 overs

    Target 274

Jason Roy plays a wristy flick through mid-wicket but Dasun Shanaka puts in a fine diving effort to prevent a run.

The England opener picks up a couple before lofting over mid-wicket for two more.

Shot! Rajitha strays short and wide and Roy isn't missing that, smashing it through the covers for four.

That's the 50 up for England.

  17. Eng 44-0published at 8 overs

    Roy 22, Hales 12

Jason Roy tries a wild hack but gets a bottom edge to the fielder. Ooh, sharp work with the throw in and Alex Hales was nearly caught out of his crease at the non-striker's end.

Tidy from Aponso, conceding just two from the over.

  18. Eng 42-0published at 7 overs

    Target 274

Rajitha starts well, conceding only a wide off four balls before the fifth is onto the pads, allowing Roy to drive forcefully wide of mid-on for four. Timing and placement both perfect.

Oh dear. There is a very dark cloud hovering nearby. The sun still shines on the pitch for now though.

Seamer Kasun Rajitha is into the attack, playing just his second ODI and first of this series.

I understand why they play football before the game but you just wouldn't want to run the risk of losing a Jos Buttler before a World Cup semi-final. Just be careful with it.

Playing football is about trying to switch off minds. Players are going to have to focus on cricket for eight hours.

I say it is like recharging the egg timer. If you let that run out you are going to be flat.

But, throughout the World Cup I wouldn't be playing football. This set of England players has an unbelievable opportunity. Don't risk anything.
