Alex Hales is opening the batting for England today. He's only batted in the nets so far in this series but comes in for the injured Jonny Bairstow.

Bairstow was crocked playing football yesterday.

Chris Woakes and Tom Curran both nipped in with a wicket today but Olly Stone went wicketless.

The Warwickshire fast bowler, playing in his fourth match, conceded 50 runs from seven overs at an economy rate of 7.14.

England generally get over the line chasing any target because of their depth and power. But I like this challenge. They came unstuck in the Champions Trophy semi-final against Pakistan last year on a similar pitch that spun. I think England will probably do it but it is a good test before next year's World Cup.

Moeen Ali was England's most successful bowler. He finished with figures of 2-55 from 10 overs.

Adil Rashid was even more economical with his 1-36 but with England only playing two spinners in this match they had to bowl pace throughout the final part of the innings.

This pitch will definitely spin for Sri Lanka's bowlers. They have three spinners. A left-armer, an offie and a mystery spinner.

England were not as good in the field as the other night. Then they were a 9.5 out of 10. Today they were 6.5 perhaps and let Sri Lanka off the hook a few times.

England started well with Chris Woakes taking the early wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal and opener Niroshan Dickwella then slowly built a partnership of 70 before both fell to Moeen Ali.

Adil Rashid dismissed Kusal Mendis as England's spinners tightened their grip on the game, reducing Sri Lanka to 102-4.

But Dasan Shanaka played the knock of the innings. He hit 66 from 66 balls before being run out in the 43rd over.

Thisara Perera and Akila Dananjaya also chipped in with 44 and 32 respectively.

The ball has spun today and Sri Lanka have three frontline spinners whereas England bowled Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid straight through.

Alex Hales was poor in the field and dropped a chance. Indeed, England feels he really needs to improve in the field. But now he has a chance with the bat. He's not played in a while and has to take it.

  9. England set 274 to winpublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 20 October 2018

England will have to bat well to win this match. It could be their first proper test of the series.

You imagine it will be trial by spin.

At the minute it doesn't look like rain will spoil this game.

Oh! Lasith Malinga finds the boundary. That's a brilliant shot. Full from Woakes and the Sri Lanka number nine guides it to the left of Jason Roy at long off.

    Sri Lanka end on 273.

That's a good score on this pitch.

But it's not the final ball. Chris Woakes bowls a wide.

Thisara run out (Stokes) 44 (SL 268-7)

Don't take on Ben Stokes' arm, especially when you turn like a cargo ship.

Thisara Perera tries to come back for two but is well, well short when Stokes' throw arrows in above the stumps from the boundary.

Another yorker. Akila digs it out for one.

What can big Thisara Perera muster?

Full, wide yorker from Woakes. Dot ball.

Woakes, Curran and Morgan come together for a chat. England haven't had to think about things too much in this series.

  18. SL 266-6published at 49.2 overs

Akila moves around in the crease and Woakes follows him. But that's excellently flicked between the fielders!

    Four more.

Chris Woakes will bowl the final over. Akila Dananjaya is on strike...

In the slot. Six over mid-wicket! The crowd are on their feet.

  20. SL 256-6published at 49 overs

Thisara hobbles his way to two from the final ball. He doesn't look particularly comfortable.

    One over to go.

    I think 270 is par.
