  1. Eng 37-0published at 6 overs

    Roy 17, Hales 11

Roy taps a single to long on before Aponso finds a bit more bounce to Hales, who deflects it away safely enough.

Another single to finish for Roy and that's a big over for England - 13 from it and back on the front foot.

  2. Eng 34-0published at 5.2 overs

Amila Aponso had been building some pressure with dot balls but Jason Roy sees mid-off is up and smacks the spinner down the ground for four.

Sri Lanka keep the same field and so Roy marmalises the next ball for six! Tremendous power, clearing the boundary with ease.

  3. Eng 24-0published at 5 overs

Lasith Malinga sends down a low full toss that Alex Hales can only just jab his bat down on. For most bowlers it's a poor delivery or a mistake but it's incredibly effective for the Sri Lankan as he gets so much dip on it that it often foxes the batsman. Akin to a sinker or maybe even a 12-6 curveball in baseball.

That's not effective though - Malinga strays short and wide and Hales whacks it through backward point for four.

  5. Eng 20-0published at 4 overs

    Target 274

The dots continue as Amila Aponso wheels through five nagging deliveries that Alex Hales can't work away.

The last is down leg though and Hales clips it through leg for one. Good comeback from Sri Lanka after those loose first two overs.

When you are out of the team you never wish an injury or poor form on your teammates but in some ways you do. Anya Shrubsole took that six-fer in the World Cup final and I was thinking 'that should have been me'. It is a real mental challenge.

  7. Eng 19-0published at 3 overs

Lasith Malinga checks that progress with five dot balls before he slides a wide down leg.

The proper sixth delivery is a dot too though. A fine over from the wily veteran.

  8. Eng 18-0published at 2 overs

    Target 274

Shot! Alex Hales just leans into the final ball of the over and caresses it through the covers for four.

England making rapid progress to start this chase.

  9. Eng 13-0published at 1.1 overs

And Alex Hales gets off the mark first ball with an easy drive to long on. A gift from Sri Lanka that.

This is an opportunity for Alex Hales. When you get an opportunity through injury you have to take it. Bairstow and Roy have been outstanding for England. They haven't looked like a bad run of form. Hales has to remind everyone what a good player he is.

Slow left-armer Amila Aponso will open the bowling from t'other end.

  12. Eng 12-0published at 1 overs

    Roy 4, Hales 0

Malinga responds with two dot balls to end an eventful first over.

  13. Eng 12-0published at 0.4 overs

Shot! Three fours in a row and the first off the bat is a peach, Jason Roy clattering it through cover point.

  14. Eng 8-0published at 0.3 overs

Make that two leg-bye boundaries in a row. Malinga slings it down and the ball swings and bounces away from Dickwella to the fence.

    Not the best keeping there.

That ball was revealing. It rolled along the floor. This is the challenge England need. It is not going to be easy.

  16. Eng 4-0published at 0.2 overs

    Target 274

Ugh. The second ball keeps very low, sliding under Jason Roy's miscued drive and nutmegging Niroshan Dickwella before racing away to the boundary.

  17. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

    Cheers Matt.

It's Lastih Malinga to Jason Roy first up and the Surrey man covers up in defence.

Anyway, Hales now has his chance to stake a claim for Bairstow's opening batting spot.

The England openers are out in the middle.
