    Mendis c Stokes b Plunkett 56 (SL 270-3)

Liam Plunkett was poor earlier but England's Mr Reliable delivers on his return in his second spell. It's classic Plunkett. He bangs it in back of a length and Mendis can't properly connect and only skies a catch to Ben Stokes at deep mid-wicket.

Mendis goes for 56 from 33 balls and gets a big pat on the back from his captain.

All four of Sri Lanka's batsman who have batted passed 50 today. England have helped them with some bad bowling and fielding too.

Liam Plunkett returns, trying to improve his figures of 0-28 from three overs.

I'm not entirely surprised that England are a bit flat today. It's been that sort of tour - they've barely been outside because of the rain, they've already won the series and they've made a load of changes.

I think Eoin Morgan should have played today.

The groundsman gave the ball a little kiss before throwing it back.

    Chandimal 53, Mendis 54

And Tom Curran gets the same treatment. What a shot this is from Kusal Mendis. He drives Curran on the up over mid off for six. That was like Sachin.

A member of the groundstaff takes a brilliant catch in flip flops too.

And again! Another six. This time over the leg-side. Mendis goes to fifty and gets a hug from his captain. England have been rubbish.

Tom Curran replaces his younger brother. England need a wicket.

  7. 6 runs

    SL 252-2published at 37 overs

    Chandimal 51, Mendis 40

The sun has just peaked out again which is good to see.

The weather will not improve Ben Stokes' mood, however. He gets too leg side and Dinesh Chandimal flicks the ball around the corner like Mesut Ozil at the Emirates. That four brings up Chandimal's fifty which gets a loud cheer but nothing as loud as the roar when Kusal Mendis clears the rope at the end of the over. It's a big six.

Sri Lanka are on the charge.

Stokes reemerges on the boundary edge after his trip to the dressing room. Has anyone checked the lockers are ok?

Stokes leaves the field in a grump. On comes Eoin Morgan to try and calm things down.

Morgan first makes a good stop but again Sam Curran drops too short. Kusal Mendis swivels and thumps the ball over the leg side boundary...

    Ben Stokes is looking angry.

  14. SL 230-2published at 35 overs

Ben Stokes has now gone from unhappy to furious on the anger scale. "COME ON MAN" he screams at Moeen Ali after another fumble. It hasn't been good from England in the field - Tom Curran dropped a sitter earlier remember - and Stokes is letting his teammates know.

On the final ball the all-rounder fields for himself and then slams the ball down into the turf. The Sri Lankan school kids all sarcastically cheer.

  15. SL 228-2published at 34.4 overs

Now England throw away a run. Dinesh Chandimal blocks one to Jason Roy at backward point and neither batsmen move. Roy still hurls the ball from the edge of the ring at the non-striker's end, this time hitting the stumps and the ricochet allows a single.

Stokes waves his hand in frustration and then two balls later screams "come on" and slaps his hand in the direction of Mark Wood. Stokes is unhappy that Wood, fielding on the cover boundary, didn't keep the batsman down to one.

Stokes his not amused with this fielding effort.

    S Curran 5-0-39-0

I might have been wrong about the rain then.

Joe Root dives well to stop another drive from Dinesh Chandimal but then jogs straight off the field holding his wrist. He didn't look too worried, and didn't roll on the ground in pain, but that's a worry with the Tests to come.

Joe Denly comes onto the field in Root's place.

One of the photographers, Gareth Copley-Jones, is out there somewhere and reckons it's going to rain soon.

If it does and the game can't be finished today, then the match would start at 14:30 local time again on the reserve day tomorrow. Even though it's more likely to rain in the evening here.

Another boundary. Curran shakes his head. The band gets that little bit louder.

The clouds have just rolled in a little but there doesn't look to be any concern about rain for now. Let's hope it doesn't come because we have a game on.

Sam Curran is going to continue. The Sri Lankan brass band bursts into action again.
