These are not the first England bowlers to go around the park on this ground. In the first match here a Jonathan Agnew went for 0-52 from eight overs.

  3. SL 55-0published at 7 overs

    Dickwella 25, Sadeera 26

Another hack across the line sees Dickwella pick up two where better running would've given him three. Anyway, that's the 50 partnership up for Sri Lanka's openers.

Niiiice! Dickwella gets low to scoop it over his right shoulder and away for four.

An excellent start to the innings, how long can the hosts keep it going?

  4. SL 45-0published at 6 overs

Ah, that's unlucky for Sammy C (I'll try a few until one sticks) as Sadeera inside edges just past his stumps for four more.

That's nine fours for the hosts in the first six overs.

Yeesh. Mark Wood stakes his claim for ropiest fielder by making a hash of a diving stop at third man as he ends up flicking the ball back into the boundary rope behind him. Sri Lanka are flying.

England coach Paul Farbrace found something amusing during the team photograph earlier. Wonder what it was?

Maybe Adil Rashid had just claimed he was the best fielder in the team?

Mark Wood came into this series as the man in possession. England went for Stone in the first ODI and one of the things that has helped Wood and David Willey, who is injured, has been the rain. There hasn't been too much time for Stone to impress.

Stone started well but hasn't had time to build on it.

  8. SL 37-0published at 5 overs

Mark Wood slings it down wide to concede the extra before responding with a vicious, quick bumper.

That's good bowling - the Durham follows it up with a cutter that Dickwella can only defend.

The left-handed opener then hacks ungainly across the line but gets four for it. Wood puts his fingers to the bridge of his nose in frustration.

That's a better shot - Dickwella waits on one that sticks in the pitch and plays a short-arm swivel over square leg for four more. This pitch looks a belter.

The pattern of weather in Colombo over the last few days has been fairly consistent: Bright in the day, overcast through the evening then epic storms at night.

If the pattern continues, we just have to hope the rain is late enough for us to get a game in.

In the Cape Town Test of 1892, South Africa had Frank Hearne playing and he was the brother of two England players, Alec and Jack, and their cousin Jack Hearne also played for England.

  11. SL 28-0published at 4 overs

    Dickwella 7, Sadeera 18

Bang! CurranS angles it across the right-handed Sadeera and the Sri Lanka hits confidently on the up, clearing the covers and finding the fence.

And that's four more! A slower-ball half-volley from Scurran and Sadeera pushes it through the covers to the boundary.

Make it three fours in a row! Sam strays onto the pads and Saddera flicks it past short fine leg.

The younger Curran under real pressure already...he finishes with a dot ball but that's 17 off the over.

Shot! Sam Curran over-pitches a tad and Niroshan Dickwell times it exquisitely through the covers for four.

England played football again today. I think they just like it. They think it bonds them together on a long tour.

Bairstow doesn't seem to be limping too badly and had a plastic boot on the other day. It doesn't look too bad. The first Test is two weeks today. He has got time to be fit.

  15. SL 11-0published at 3 overs

A good stop from Moeen Ali at extra cover prevents a run before Sadeera just defends the last.

  16. SL 11-0published at 2.4 overs

Good pace from Mark Wood as he gets one to lift at Sadeera, who has to sway away.

Wood then angles one into the pads - there is a brief appeal for lbw but that was going down leg.

A thickish outside edge then races past the two slips and away for four, the first boundary of the day.

Despite the empty seats, it's a cracking atmosphere here. It's going to be a face-off between the Barmies in the Grandstand and about 1,000 school kids in the stand opposite!

    Dickwella 2, Sadeera 2

Sam Curran tries to swing it back into the right-handed Sadeera, who gets it away off a thick outside edge for one.

Just a single elsewhere for Dickwella. A very tidy start from the younger Curran.

  20. Wood looks to secure place in teampublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 23 October 2018

England fast bowler Mark Wood on the Cricket Social: "It's been frustrating not to have played to date but that's the way it is when the lads are doing well and winning games. But now I have my chance and I have to try to take it.

"Sometimes I try too hard but i will try to relax and try to push my case for future tours with the World Cup around the corner.

"I need to bowl well, try to take key wickets and put in match-winning performances - that's the way to secure your place in the team.

"The key to me is try to have fun and enjoy it when I'm bowling."
