Keaton Jennings is sharing a joke with the Sri Lanka fielders at the end of drinks. He looks very calm and moves into the eighties with another single. At what point does he start to think about the H word?

I'd personally rather Stokes than Buttler or Bairstow at three. It wouldn't be ideal but would be my preference to the other two.

Ben Stokes has the best technique and the most adaptable mindset. He can bat anywhere between 3 and 8 effectively I think. Been through a lot recently but still our best player for me

Is that not just Ben Foakes in a black t-shirt? His brother looks like his identical twin!

There were 14 runs in that previous over. All of them came off Ben Stokes' bat. He has moved things on for England in the last 20 minutes and as he goes he's using more and more different types of shots.

Now the all-rounder reverse sweeps, I think for the first time today. This is now getting into a position where Sri Lanka have very little to bowl for. England have a huge lead.

    That's drinks.

Ben Stokes has his fifth fifty in Asia - one of which he has converted to a hundred. He scored 128 in India in 2016.

Ben Stokes is rattling along. Now Akila drops short and the all-rounder cuts to perfection through extra cover and it zips along to the fence.

That brings up his fifty in 82 balls and he raises his bat to appreciate the warm applause.

Sorry but you just can't drop him.

Six more to Ben Stokes! It's another slog sweep.

I don't think he quite got all of this but it still went all the way.

That takes England's lead over 300.

Does anyone else think Stokes actually has the best technique of any England batsman?

Same players next match. Buttler to three. No place for Bairstow now we have someone who can keep well.

    Andy, Manchester

Stokes is THE clear man to move to 3. He is the only one who plays responsibly enough. True Test batsman.

    Chris, Bucks

  12. Eng 154-3published at 57 overs

    Jennings 77, Stokes 39

Jonny Bairstow may be limited to 12th man duties but he seems to be having the time of his life.

He ends up having to hunt under the covers for the ball after that Stokes six and pops up like a meerkat, beaming in amusement. Chris Woakes is down there too.

More easy runs come to both Stokes and Jennings in the rest of the over. This partnership is now worth 80.

That's Ben Stokes at his absolute best!

A skip down the pitch and he launches the off-spinner Perera down the ground for a big six.

That brings back memories of Cape Town.

  14. Eng 145-3published at 56 overs

That four to Jennings has resulted in Sri Lanka's stand-in captain removing one of his close catchers and putting him in a more defensive position.

    Another win for Keats.

Jonny Bairstow runs on as the 12th man at the end in some smart shades and towels down the sweaty Stokes. What a way to spend your Thursday.

  15. Eng 143-3published at 55.1 overs

Now a boundary for Jennings, just his second of the day. It's another clever reverse sweep. It doesn't look particularly pretty but is effective for the opener. This one goes hard into the ground, up over slip and quickly down the third man.

There are two types of weather, frontal rain and showery rain. A front is a band of rain, we are relatively good at forecasting when and where that is going to come, to within one or two hours.

You can often confidently say 'it will rain after lunch' and it will. Showers are much harder to forecast.

One lbw reprieve aside, Keaton Jennings has not looked troubled today. Sorry in advance for the wicket that'll now come.

Perera gets another to move like it's hit a massive crack on a pavement but Jennings holds his bat inside the line and the ball passes by safely.

  18. Eng 138-3published at 54 overs

    Jennings 70, Stokes 30

Buttler or Bairstow at three would probably help things but then who do you leave out?! Would they still want three spinners for the next match?

Ben Stokes has just lifted up his helmet and a stream of sweat poured out. It's another hot day in Galle. I still find it remarkable that Alastair Cook didn't even sweat in these conditions. How is that even possible?

Keaton Jennings is just clipping the ball into open spaces nicely here.

Why not Buttler at 3? He's not keeping, and he's shown that he can assess a game situation and play accordingly.

    Roy, Cheltenham

England dropped Dawid Malan from their T20 squad averaging 50 after five matches with a SR of 150 - I wouldn't put anything past the England selectors right now.

But Paul, Buttler was England's best batsman in the summer and Root doesn't want to bat three! It's a minefield.

That's a cracking shot from Ben Stokes. He leans right forward and sweeps Perera hard over mid-wicket and the ball bounces once before going for four.
