    Stokes 10, Burns 16

Jonny Bairstow, watching on from the dug out with a fan plonked firmly in front of him, looks a bit glum. This tour hasn't exactly turned out how he was hoping.

Short from Lakmal and Stokes goes after it, dragging the ball down and in front of the man on the leg side boundary.

Digger looks like an excellent dog.

    Suranga Lakmal will continue.

Katy Cooke: Now, either Digger here is excitedly waiting for the first ball to be bowled or else he wants to go for a walk before it gets too hot here in Mozambique...

Four! Another fine sweep shot from Rory Burns, picking off a leggy delivery from Dilruwan Perera and sending it flying to the boundary.

The opener defends the rest of the over.

This is England’s first Test match at the Pallekele International stadium.

Previously in this central area of Sri Lanka, England have played at the Asgiriya Stadium which is a short walk from the centre of Kandy.

The Asgiriya is one of the most beautiful grounds in the world, surrounded by mountains and with the added bonus that Sri Lankan buddhist monks would often appear in bright orange to observe proceedings.

    Buddhist monks

The Asgiriya is actually the private property of Trinity College where Kumar Sangakkara was a student.

England’s 88-run defeat in 2007 was the last Test played at that ground, a match notable for Muttiah Muralitharan going past Shane Warne as the leading wicket-taker in Tests.

    Stokes 8, Burns 12

A nice little chop from Ben Stokes beats the leaping fielder at backward point, and Stokes and Burns take the opportunity to run three. Stokes is making a point of getting down the pitch to Suranga Lakmal and defending.

The ground at Pallekele is absolutely stunning. More Test venues should have grass banks.

After his impressive showing in Galle, I’m afraid that was rather a typical Jennings dismissal facing pace bowling.

Bowled round the wicket, that ball straightened a little, but Jennings was too stiff. A loose push with his right foot and he was not close enough to the pitch of the ball.

It is why people are yet to be totally convinced he has the technique to cope with seam bowling, especially in England.

The England fans applaud as Rory Burns works Dilruwan Perera through backward point for a couple, before the opener gets down low and sweeps nicely for four.

Dilruwan tightens up his line and Burns covers up in defence.

Stokes at three makes sense with this 11 but when Stokes is your best choice at three, and averaging 34 in Test cricket, it doesn't look good for the future.

    Lakmal 3-0-10-1

A fine way to get off the mark for Ben Stokes as Suranga Lakmal strays onto his pads and the Durham all-rounder happily works him away through square leg for four.

Positive: England didn't lose their first wicket to spin.

Negative: They're 7-1 after five overs.

Here's Ben Stokes in his new position at number three.

    Gone!

Oh, that is lovely from Suranga Lakmal. He's been testing Keaton Jennings with that probing line and Jennings couldn't resist. A little nibble forward, not a lot of foot movement, and an outside edge goes through to a tumbling Niroshan Dickwella behind the stumps.

That lbw shout would have been umpire's call on height, according to ball tracking.

Ooft. Dilruwan Perera gets a delivery to keep low, hitting Rory Burns low on the pad, but it's too leg side to trouble the umpire.

A leading edge from Burns drops just short of short leg, before Dilruwan appeals for an lbw. Too high, for my money. It's, er, definitely spinning out there.

Sri Lanka have recorded just one Test victory at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, that win coming against Australia in 2016 – this is their worst record at any home ground since the turn of the century.

    Burns 5, Jennings 1

Suranga Lakmal continues, three slips in place, and he whistles a lovely delivery past Keaton Jennings' outside edge from round the wicket.

Jennings leaves the final ball of the over well alone.

  17. Eng 5-0published at 2 overs

Hello! Dilruwan's first delivery spins past Keaton Jennings' outside edge and through to the keeper.

Jennings gets off the mark with a reverse sweep for one, before Dilruwan gets his final ball to spit up and turn past the bat of Rory Burns.

No first names for Root, Buttler and Leach. Presumably they were running short on the J's?

    Here's off-spinner Dilruwan Perera.

    Runs!

Four of them to be precise, as Rory Burns shuffles himself into position and flicks a straight delivery away through the leg side. Lovely stuff.
