Can Tim Murtagh qualify for England?

    Mithun, London

  2. Ire 5-0published at 3 overs

Yeesh. James McCollum has an ungainly flay at a wide one from Stuart Broad and is a tad fortunate not to nick off.

Nothing ungainly about this one though - a cracking square drive to dispatch a full ball away to the point boundary for four.

  3. Ire 1-0published at 2.1 overs

    Trail by 84

A brief lbw shout as Stuart Broad gets one onto William Porterfield's pads. Sliding down though.

And Ireland get their first run from the leg bye.

That is a truly pathetic performance. Absolutely no mettle, no patience, no application. It's a Test match and England have utterly failed the test... again.

    Matthew Staines, Chelmsford

  5. Ire 0-0published at 2 overs

Chris Woakes also sends down a maiden. But not a great one - plenty of wide stuff as the Warwickshire all-rounder struggled with his line.

James McCollum will face Chris Woakes to start the second over.

The Ireland opener averages over 50 in his 15 first-class matches to date, with a couple of tons. Promising.

  8. Ire 0-0published at 1 over

Stuart Broad starts with a maiden.

  9. Ire 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Stuart Broad goes round the wicket to the left-handed William Porterfield, who clips the first ball off his pads for no run.

Well you can't judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it, eh? You can still judge that England effort.

Ireland's openers have made their way out to the middle.

Stuart Broad has the new ball in hand...

The England side that got to number one in the world had seven batsmen averaging 40 or over in Test cricket. And we probably all just took it for granted a bit.

That said, even if the current batsmen are not as talented, the regularity with which they make the same mistakes is alarming.

Getting bowled out in a single session four times in three years is truly shocking.

I agree with everything Michael Vaughan said about England's woes against the moving ball except one thing...

England do not have so much talent in Test cricket. The bowling is strong but the batting is poor.

Jonny Bairstow averages 36.95. Moeen Ali - 30.09.

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler will return to the middle order next week, averaging 33.89 and 35.87.

And when you put a very inexperienced top order, all of whom are still trying to prove they are good enough to play at Test level, on top of that...well, this happens.
