Tim Murtagh has bowled Jonny Bairstow - but Bairstow has pulled out of his stance!
Honestly, Bairstow has turned away from this delivery extremely late. Murtagh looks irked.

The umpire has had to tell Jonny Bairstow he can't scrape the ground to make his mark that far out of the crease.
This is interesting.
Jonny Bairstow is setting himself up and the umpire at square leg has just wandered over to have a word with him about where he's standing. He's so far down the pitch - he's honestly about two foot out of his crease - and the umpire has had a word with him about damaging the pitch, I think?

A top three of Burns, Roy and Denly against the Aussies? Yikes. May as well let them keep the urn. Not being negative, just realistic. England's top order Test batting is in a horrendous state. Mark, Oxford
Well then.
Jonny Bairstow has come out to join Joe Root.

No feet from Rory Burns.

Ireland are on fire in this Test and England are reeling!
Burns c Wilson b Murtagh 6 (Eng 36-3)
My WORD.
Move your feet! Oh, Rory Burns will be furious with himself. He basically stands still and wafts his bat forward at this off stump delivery from Tim Murtagh, and the ball takes a thick outside edge. Gary Wilson sees the ball late but he times his move brilliantly, throwing himself to the left and snaffling the ball just inches from the turf. What a start from Ireland!

I loved the World Cup, it was terrific fun, but I was a shadow of myself by the end of it. It's lovely to be back in the rhythm of Test cricket.
Joe Root is greeted to the crease by a Mark Adair delivery that just jags past his outside edge.
We've just seen the replay of the Joe Denly dismissal - it wasn't so much hitting as clattering into leg stump. As out as out can be.

Fenners: If it was James Vince everyone would be calling for his head right now...
Mark B: Roy's dismissal wasn't surprising considering I suspect he hasn't even seen a red ball this wonderful summer. But no matter, he'll learn quickly. Which is just as well because Starc will be bowling those sorts of deliveries 20 mph quicker.
Tom Shaw: I really hope England (AND THE PUBLIC / MEDIA) let Roy try to bat his way and give him leeway to do so. It would be oh so very English to break down his technique and confidence to the point where his white ball form suffers as a result.
England might have won a World Cup but their Test top-order is still officially in a kerfuffle.
Joe Root strides out with England 36-2. Which seems to happen a lot.

That looked very, very close. Credit to Rory Burns for standing firm and telling Joe Denly he thought that was out.
A very good start by Ireland.

A full delivery and Joe Denly missed it trying to play straight down the ground.
Denly lbw b Adair 23 (Eng 36-2)
Gone! Joe Denly, out lbw!
Denly waits a long time before deciding not to review it, but I suspect that it was out. It was full and straight and Denly played all around it, the ball thudding into his back leg. It just looked out, and the umpire raises his finger almost straight away.

This is England's first Test match at Lord's where the opposing XI has more first-class appearances (93 - Murtagh 72, Stirling 15) at the ground coming into the game than the England XI (88).
Mark Adair whistles down a bouncer and Gary Wilson goes flying to his left, goalkeeper style, to stop it flying away for byes.
Joe Denly goes for another loose drive but he inside edges it into his foot, and he's lucky the ball doesn't trickle on to the stumps.

And so after a 12 day period of soaring workplace productivity in the UK we are back to nothing being done for 50% of the week.

Gary Wilson should think about moving up - Tim Murtagh would rather the catch is dropped than it just not even carry.
