Now it's Rory Burns' turn to edge Tim Murtagh just short of the slip cordon, before consecutive deliveries go whipping past his outside edge.

Murtagh isn't the quickest bowler around, but his accuracy is unerring. And if the England top-order are edging the ball around this much against a man of his pace, how are they going to handle the proper pace that Australia have in their ranks?

I'm in my seat in the Compton stand cheering on my native Ireland following 7 weeks of being England mad at the World Cup. In a month I'll be at Trent Bridge backing England in the Ashes. Can't think of any other sport I could do this in.

Jason Roy will play some iffy shots, but over time, if he's giving a run in the side, he will be disruptive and he will put opposing bowlers under pressure.

Let's be honest, there's not a lot out there - there are a couple of young players in Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley.

But with Jason Roy's swagger and confidence, unless he overthinks it, I can't see how he won't be a success at this level.

That's better from Joe Denly, guiding Mark Adair off his legs and pushing him away for a more convincing four.

  5. Eng 27-1published at 7.1 overs

    Edged - but it's four!

Oh, Joe. He throws the kitchen sink at Mark Adair, going for a big booming drive, and a thick outside edge flies between third slip and gully and away to the boundary.

There was two there, they just didn't run the first quickly enough.

  8. Eng 23-1published at 7 overs

There's a proper Lord's hum rippling throughout the crowd. Quiet conversations, the odd ooh as bat beats ball.

And then, out of nowhere, Joe Denly almost ends up running himself out. He clips to cover, runs a single, and then slips as he's halfway up the pitch trying to run the second. The shy at the stumps is good, and Gary Wilson is ready and waiting to whip the bails off, but Denly had flung himself back into his crease just in time.

Here's how Jason Roy's Test debut came to an end, courtesy of Tim Murtagh.

Mark Adair's response is an off stump teaser that just beats the edge of Joe Denly's bat.

Shot! Hello, that is lovely from Joe Denly, coming out of his crease and driving Mark Adair square for the first four of the Test summer.

And Denly follows it up with four more! It's through extra cover this time, not quite timed, but Denly's got enough willow on leather to push the ball to the boundary.

Charlie Newman: Jason Roy deserves all 5 Ashes Tests. Whilst established players like Root and Bairstow shy away from playing 1-3, Roy fully commits despite hardly playing first-class cricket and when he does not even opening...

Gary Wilkinson: Not a great start for Roy that, but it’s a great opening spell from Murtagh! Would have challenged most with that delivery.

  14. Eng 13-1published at 5 overs

Hello! Tim Murtagh slides another nipper past the edge of Joe Denly's bat as he covers up in defence. It's so good watching someone who understands Lord's as well as Murtagh bowling with a shiny red ball.

Denly gets into a mess trying to leave a delivery outside his off stump but it goes on the bounce towards the slip cordon, and Denly gets a single to his name.

A terrific dive at square leg cuts off a leggy clip from Rory Burns, and the opener settles for a leisurely single instead.

Joe Denly is off the mark from his next ball, pushing three runs through gully.

Joe Denly is content to see out the remaining two deliveries of Tim Murtagh's over.

There's warm applause for the Middlesex man as he retrieves his cap from the umpire.

Have they told Jason Roy he has got the whole summer, regardless? Opening the batting in England you are going to get a few good balls that are just going to get you out.

Joe Denly is in at three for England.

That was a cracking delivery from Tim Murtagh. Paul Stirling ended up taking it between his wrists, actually.
