Mark Stringer: Nobody has mentioned Joe Denly at 3...really is he the best we have? Surely a great opportunity to blood somebody else.

Tim Fry: England's line up looks very bowler heavy. Would anyone else have gone for Ben Foakes and picked Jonny Bairstow as a specialist batsman?

  2. The times you need to knowpublished at 10:48 British Summer Time 24 July 2019

    Afternoon Session: 13.55 - 16:10

You could say it feels like the morning after the night before, but that would do the occasion an injustice. Yes, the pace is slower, the crowd not as urgent, and there is much more room in the press box. But it's certainly no less pleasant or exciting. Think Boxing Day, or the day after a wedding when everyone swaps drunken stories over a barbecue.

  5. Australia lose 17 wickets in a day...published at 10:43 British Summer Time 24 July 2019

On an Ashes related note, Australia are currently warming up with a four day intra-squad match down in Southampton.

The Brad Haddin XI batted first and were bowled out for 105, and the Graeme Hick XI reached 96-7 at stumps in reply.

I guess what I'm saying is, day five Ashes tickets might not be the best investment...

This is the first time England and Ireland have met in Test cricket - in fact, this is only Ireland's third outing with the red ball.

They were beaten by five wickets against Pakistan in May - although at one point they had Pakistan 14-3 - and they lost to Afghanistan in March earlier this year.

England, meanwhile, have played three Tests this year. They were beaten 2-1 by West Indies in the Caribbean back in February.

Ireland captain William Porterfield: "There was a bit of discussion about what we might do. There might be a bit in it for the first few hours so hopefully we can utilise that. I think it might do a bit, we've just got to make the most of that. Quite a few guys have played a lot of county cricket around the country so that experience is there."

England captain Joe Root: "It looks quite dry underneath. We're playing two spinners so we need to make the most of that. Hopefully we can get ourselves in, make a big score and take the game from there."
