    Breaking

We have some news - of sorts - on James Anderson's fitness. Remember, he bowled only four overs on Thursday because of a calf injury.

The ECB says Anderson is expected to bat, but did not confirm if he will bowl in the second innings.

Rory Burns went early there and Nathan Lyon saw it and speared it down leg side.

Joe Root pushes to cover and gets a single as the man there fumbles trying to stop the ball.

Eurgh! Rory Burns comes dancing out of his crease to Nathan Lyon's fourth ball but he goes too early, and Lyon sees him coming. Burns ends up doing the splits as he tries to defend, and he gets completely turned around by Lyon's next ball, which spins sharply.

  4. Eng 33-1published at 12.1 overs

Nathan Lyon took 21 wickets in the last Ashes series at an average of 29. He's not got as many left-handers to bowl at in this England line-up, but still...

And, naturally, his first ball turns an absolute mile outside off stump! Where's that come from?!

All of Nathan Lyon's theatrical warm-ups have paid off - he's coming on to bowl to Joe Root.

    Yes, Ravichandran. Yes they should.

  8. Eng 33-1published at 12 overs

    Burns 15, Root 3

I have a genuine soft spot for Peter Siddle. He and his partner used to look after rescue dogs until they found a permanent home which, in my eyes, is superb.

Hello, Siddle starts an appeal against Burns, trapping him on the crease as he comes round the wicket, but Burns has inside edged that onto his pad.

Arabella Munro: Always think Peter Siddle seems like a genuinely lovely guy when I see him interviewed. Hard to even hope he'll be rubbish today.

  10. Eng 33-1published at 11.2 overs

This is a big test. England collapsed against Ireland when the ball moved, and Siddle is the one Australian bowler who will find any swing or seam that's out there. He's been in terrific form for Essex this season.

Rory Burns greets him with an outside edge that trickles down through gully for a couple.

One man who is used to bowling an English length is Peter Siddle.

Time for a change of bowling - James Pattinson is off, and Peter Siddle is on.

Pattinson did for Jason Roy a little earlier...

Australia have won the toss six times in a row in Ashes Tests at Edgbaston but have won only one of those matches.

Rory Burns, who is fine to continue, takes a sharp single off his next Pat Cummins delivery.

Joe Root, who hasn't quite found his timing yet, ends the over with a horrible miscue of a drive that dribbles to point.

Bouncer from Pat Cummins - and that beats everyone!

Rory Burns ducks but the ball skims across his helmet, taking it over the head of a leaping Tim Paine and away for four byes.

  18. Eng 26-1published at 10.1 overs

Well that's a proper play and a miss from Rory Burns, tempted into a little fiddle at a Pat Cummins teaser outside his off stump.

Nathan Lyon is going through some very elaborate warm-ups at cover. He's essentially doing yoga.

  20. 'A very Jason Roy dismissal'published at 11:39 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Tom Fordyce
BBC chief sports writer at Edgbaston

A nervous hum around Edgbaston with the early travails of England’s top order. Jason Roy’s dismissal brought sighs and groans, a very Jason Roy dismissal and a very English opening pair start to an innings.
