He miscued there and it was almost a caught and bowled.
Oh, hello! A beauty from James Pattinson, getting a delivery to slide past Joe Root's edge, but Root gets a thick edge on his next delivery to get his innings under way.
Root skews a drive down the ground, the ball bobbling off the bottom of the bat, and he's lucky that the ball just drops short of Pattinson in his follow through.
Nervy times.
I think Jason Roy can perform in Test cricket. Would I have him opening? No, but then, we're not exactly blessed with openers, are we?

George Gray: Hales opening in Test cricket didn't work. Why try the same experiment again with Roy?
Leon Lewis: Despite only getting 10, it was encouraging that Roy has recognised he needs to play later and softer, and is attempting to do so. Won't happen overnight.

The Barmy Army are all wearing Ben Stokes masks. It's oddly creepy.
Pat Cummins whistles down his first real short ball and Rory Burns deals with it well, getting in line and defending with the full face of the bat, before Cummins has a very optimistic shout for lbw to a delivery that hits Burns in the stomach. Not out.

After the Hollies gave "cheerio" send-offs to the Aussie batsmen yesterday, the visiting fans tried to do the same to Jason Roy. They got it all wrong.
Rory Burns will face up to Pat Cummins.
Here's what happened a little earlier...

Töm Töm: To Matt at Oxford, if it's taking eight hours to drive from Oxford to Cornwall mate then I think you're going the wrong way.
Neal, Stockport: To Matt from Oxford.... 8 hours from Oxford to Cornwall? Google maps say just over 4 hours..... are you driving a tractor?
Johnny Munro: Re Matt from Oxford. Is he walking to Cornwall?
Pattinson 4-2-11-1
Nice from Joe Root, shuffling into line behind his second ball, but his push down the ground is cut off by a scrabbling fielder at mid-on.
James Pattinson offers Root some helpful batting advice as Root lets a delivery nibble past his off stump, and that'll be that.

Jason Roy tried his best to cover the line and keep it down but he couldn't.
That's James Pattinson's first Test wicket since February 2016.
Right then. Here's Joe Root, back at three...

That's a good ball - angling in from wide of a crease, he got it to bounce off a length and move away. You just have to accept there is going to be the odd good ball when you open the batting.

Jason Roy tried to go soft at the last minute but it hit a firm edge and Steve Smith caught it well low down.

Gone! Caught at slip!
That's a fine grab from Steve Smith at second slip, and a nice ball from James Pattinson. Jason Roy's playing back to a delivery that angles away from him - I wonder if he went at it a little hard? A thick outside edge goes low to Smith, who bends forward, hands cupped, and gets both hands underneath the ball as it threatens to skim the turf.

So far, so good from England, particularly Rory Burns. His hands look tighter to his body and he's letting the ball come. It's easier to know where your off-stump is then as well.

There were some screenshots of Rory Burns' technique doing the rounds this week, showing his stance in a county match for Surrey versus his stance against Ireland. He looks to be covering up his stumps a little more, to my very untrained eye.

Rory Burns has definitely changed something in his technique this week - he looks more compact.
