Phil Tufnell told me this England side need "mental flexibility" today. I'm not sure what that means and I'm not sure Tuffers does either.

A solid drive from Rory Burns up front, and it's cut off at cover by a swooping Nathan Lyon.

And, of course, the clouds have just rolled in as Rory Burns paws away at the pitch.

Pat Cummins will start, three slips and a gully lurking behind the stumps.

    Here. We. Go.

What's in store today? I don't think anybody has got any idea whatsoever.

Jason Roy will resume on six not out, while Rory Burns is unbeaten on four.

Pat Cummins and James Pattinson - who I am very excited to watch today - bowled an over apiece last night and by the looks of things, it'll be Cummins to get things going today.

  6. 'It could be glorious, it could be horrific'published at 10:58 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Tom Fordyce
BBC chief sports writer at Edgbaston

Warm and sunny at Edgbaston, an air of expectation and trepidation around the concrete concourses and breakfast spots. This England batting line-up does that to you. It could be glorious, it could be horrific. It’s much more rare to be somewhere comfortably numb in between.

It's about time for some cricket.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

This looks a really good pitch and any batsman would be happy to strap on the pads and get out there. It's not a quick pitch but if you're patient and find the right balance between risk and reward the top order should at least set a platform so the middle order can enjoy themselves.

  9. Postpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

I genuinely don't know what to expect here. It's England - they could be 100-0, they could be 40-5.

I don't have that horrible feeling of doom just yet, but that might change after the first five overs.

Rory Burns has shown good concentration for Surrey and the ability to bat for a long time, he needs to play that natural game here.

So, after not receiving any tips yesterday about how to combine the Ashes and writing a thesis, I have decided to defer for a year to concentrate on the cricket.

  12. 'Lyon is Australia's best off-spinner ever'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Jim Maxwell
    BBC Test Match Special

Nathan Lyon is the best off-spinner Australia have had - ever. Whether the batsman is right-handed, left-handed or ambidextrous, it doesn't matter, so long as Lyon has the right surface to bowl on. He and Peter Siddle will be the glue bowlers to keep the game tight. But Lyon is also a wicket-taking bowler not just a blocker of an end.

    Phil Tufnell
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Nathan Lyon is a very good bowler, he threatens both sides of the bat. England need to use their feet against him otherwise he can suffocate you.

  15. 'Moeen said it's spinning and bouncing'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

Australia's Nathan Lyon on BBC Test Match Special: "Moeen Ali was telling while I was batting that it was spinning and bouncing, so that will be nice for me. If it's a spinning wicket I'd rather bowl to right-handers."

Frank Sidekick: I still fancy England to win this but... yesterday and the Ireland test have fully demonstrated how Joe Root is a wonderful cricketer but a terrible captain. We need a proper leader and innovative thinker in that role.

Max Headroom: Lots of people moaning about Root's tactics yesterday, but the Aussies under 300 with a top bowler missing is awesome.

  17. 'Bat for the bowlers'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

England's batsmen need to bat for the bowlers - let them have a rest and get their feet up for a day. If England are bowling again today, the game is gone.

  18. 'We don't hear the crowds'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

Nathan Lyon speaking to Test Match Special about batting with Steve Smith: "I'm always nervous when I go out to bat because I can't bat! There was plenty of nerves out there. I think its one of the proudest moments of my career, to be out there with him. It was pretty special. I didn't even notice the crowd reaction, I was too busy cheering for him. It's a great atmosphere here. It's a nice place to play cricket but to be honest, we don't really hear the crowds."

England players cannot copy Steve Smith - he is a freak. But they can copy Peter Siddle. You don't need all your shots in Test cricket - you only need two or three. They need to work out those two or three shots. Can they work out a method?
