Root 24, Buttler 0
Jos Buttler leaves his first delivery as Nathan Lyon goes round the wicket and is fortunate to see it slide past off-stump.

That was an all too frantic innings for me. England were controlling the day until Jason Roy decided to dance down. You could see the Aussies were starting to get a bit frustrated. It's a day where you don't play your natural game. I hate that saying. You have to play the situation - which is that England have to bat 540 balls.
Denly c Bancroft b Lyon 11 (Eng 80-3)
Umpire Aleem Dar got it spot on. Joe Denly nicked that and England lose a review.
Denly took a couple of steps down, trying to work into leg, was beaten by the spin and the ball flicked the inside edge before looping up off the pad for Cameron Bancroft to snaffle it at short leg.
Excellent bowling by Nathan Lyon to end a frenetic knock by Denly.
I know England are not blessed with batting options right now, but I really don't think Denly is good enough to bat at four in Test cricket.

You could see Denly saying to Root that he hadn't felt anything. But on a day like this, you don't want to lose a review.
Joe Denly looks to have looped up a catch off his pad to be dismissed by Nathan Lyon.
He's given out and takes an age to review, doing so with one second to go.

There's variable bounce there for the fast bowlers, which you can get on a day five wicket. It's dry so it can go up and down.

That bounced and moved and climbed. What a good ball.
Target 398
Yikes. Peter Siddle gets one to snort off a length and just evade Joe Denly's outside edge.
That's a fine maiden over.

Zımy: Can't criticise Roy for that. Would be silly to. On another day he might win us a Test match playing like that.
I have not seen 15 worse shots played by a batsman trying to save the game.

Where was the keeper? Tim Paine is not having a good day.
Australia need eight wickets to win
Joe Denly whacks a sweep shot straight into short leg Cameron Bancroft's shin.
The next keeps low and he does well in the end to one-handed flick it through mid-wicket for a single.
Joe Root allows the last to spin down the leg side, Tim Paine makes a hash of it and the ball streaks away for four byes.
Joe Denly whips the ball straight through short leg for a single. You'd be very unlucky to see that stick.

Jonny Green: I like Jason Roy, but that shot shows how ill-suited his mentality is to Test cricket. Problem is, who else do we have?
Grant Kennett: Roy will be Roy... That wicket totally sums up why he is the wrong player to open in Tests. We’ve got a big problem.
Stuart Mitchell: Roy is another of those batsman that would be great for England coming in lower down the order, he's not a natural red ball opener as much as I've wanted it to work out for him at the top.
Target 398
Joe Root clips Peter Siddle off his toes and scampers two.

I'm putting up some iron gates so Geoffrey can't get into the commentary box after that shot from Roy.

There's all sorts of head-shaking, tutting and "that's the problem with Roy" chat in the stands. As he walked off, Roy actually paused at the dressing-room door, as if he wasn't sure if he should go in. Also, thanks for the those who suggested radio fixes. I'm back in the commentary game.
Target 398
And Joe Denly responds by clattering two sweetly-timed sweeps for two fours in a row.
Mayhem.
