Frantic.

Frantic.
Buttler 1, Stokes 0
Ben Stokes angles a thick outside edge short and wide of slip. Eek.
That plane banner calling for Ben Stokes to be knighted was ludicrous. It would still be ludicrous if he batted out the day, but less so.
England's World Cup final hero defends his first delivery.

Look at the celebrations. Australia know that could be the match. The best player of spin is back on his way to the dressing room before lunch. Nathan Lyon has three wickets and he's yet to bowl to a left hander.

Tony Greaves: Oh dear. That, I'm afraid, is that.
Paul Beard: Well that’s the game gone.
Paul Baldwin: Well that's that then...

Joe Root is furious! It went pretty hard and sharp and Root thumped his bat as he walks slowly back to the dressing room.
Root c Bancroft b Lyon 28 (Eng 85-4)
That has torn it.
Nathan Lyon gets one to fizz out of the rough, Joe Root gets forward but the ball leaves him, deflecting off an inside edge straight to Cameron Bancroft at short leg.
England's captain is back in the hutch before lunch and Lyon already has three wickets.
Miracle required.

An almost reassuringly familiar feeling for the England fans brave enough to come to Edgbaston: a resignation, some gallows humour, plenty of heavy sighs and grimaces

Joe Root has to bat all day.

Dead in line. But umpire's call on height.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.
Jos Buttler gets away with one.

Oh, it's close...
Australia have screamed themselves hoarse in appeal for lbw against Jos Buttler.
This time, umpire Joel Wilson says no.
Australia are incredulous and send it upstairs straight away.

Christopher Beck: My work laptop just randomly shut down because of an 'unexpected error' - presumably in shock at *that* Jason Roy shot...
Michael Vaughan

I thought Jason Roy played beautifully, up until that moment. He was playing in late, playing with control, letting the ball go through to the keeper when it wasn't there to hit. He'd reached a nice tempo.
Nathan Lyon wheels through a maiden as Jos Buttler plays watchfully.
It's tough to nail exactly what it is, but Joe Denly just does not look like an international batsman.
He doesn't look too bad at the crease and doesn't have a particularly pronounced technical flaw like Gary Ballance or Keaton Jennings, although his footwork isn't great at times.
It's just, he looks a bit frenzied and always finds a way to get out - the worst knack a batsman can have.
Giving so much backing to Denly is perhaps the most puzzling decision of Ed Smith's time as chief selector.

Dan Gee: We should drop Denly purely for that review.
Sam: Joe Denly is NOT a Test standard batsman.

This is a beautiful spell from Peter Siddle.
Root 27, Buttler 1
Joe Root hustles a single and Jos Buttler gets off the mark by clipping off his pads for a single.
Root flicks through mid-wicket for two more.

Nathan Lyon will be licking his lips.
