There are two ways to look at Jason Roy's wicket.

One is that if you pick an ultra-aggressive opening batsman who has made his name in one-day and T20 cricket then you are going to get shots like this.

The other is that you simply cannot play a shot like this when you are trying to save a draw.

    Either way, it looks terrible.

2nd test: Sibley, Burns, Root, Stokes, Roy, Buttler, Foakes, Woakes, Archer, Broad, Leach. Get Jason Roy lower down so that he has some sort of licence to play his more natural aggressive game, he's done it for Surrey in the CC. If he improves his temperament in Test cricket then he could become an opener. Dom Sibley needs his chance, Jonny and Moeen are not up to it at the moment, Denly never has been.

It only took until the third over of the day for Australia to make their breakthrough.

Rory Burns got a good nut. Could he have left it? Probably.

If England do go on to lose this game it certainly won't be his fault.

Let's try and remain positive. Including this pair our next six batsmen all have Test centuries to their name. We can still get this over the line people, keep the faith!

I guess the positive for England is they still have the two batting heroes from that World Cup final at the crease. Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes are going to have to do something just as, if not more, remarkable.

You just feel England's chances of saving a draw ended with the departure of Joe Root.

That was pretty deflating for England fans, wasn't it?

The Hollies Stand were happy in the haze of a drunken hour.

But heaven knows they're miserable now.

I'll leave you in the capable hands of Matt Henry for the second session.

    Go well.

England had been playing nicely and then Jason Roy decided to take an undue risk. He didn't need to do that at that stage. Australia have been magnificent. Pat Cummins set the tone and I've no idea how Peter Siddle didn't get a wicket.

Australia need six wickets to win

Ben Stokes leaves and defends his way through a testing Nathan Lyon over.

    And that's lunch.

Despite the loss of Rory Burns, it was a good first hour by England.

The second hour? Not so much. Lyon looks rampant out there.

James: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Joe Root is so overrated it’s ridiculous.

Zeeks: What a surprise, a Root led team going down without a fight. A decent batsman, on his day, but never a captain.

Keith Schofield: Joe Root is not fit to lace Steve Smith's boots. Laughable that they are mentioned in the same breath.

Jason Roy's shot was bad at the time, but is being made worse by the wickets that have followed. With the way England are batting, Australia will think one more wicket and they are into the tail.

I take your point, Myelio. There is not a particularly deep pool of red-ball batting talent around.

It just feels like England have gone away from identifying talented younger players with high upside, whose game could be really suited to Test level with hard work on what they have already.

Picking a (then) 32-year-old Joe Denly in the aftermath of the retirement of a (then) 33-year-old Alastair Cook just never made sense to me.

So in terms of other names in the short term, England should consider bringing Dawid Malan back or opening with Dominic Sibley and pushing Jason Roy down the order.

And could they develop Sam Hain? Always thought he has the talent that could translate at international level.

And, of course, Ben Foakes may be out of form with the bat but looked very comfortable in his Tests so far.

Myelio: Everyone calling for players to be dropped infuriates me when they can't then name players that should be replacing the individual being dropped. County level clearly needs some work to improve our batting issues.. Maybe spend more time on that then on the 'Hundred'
