Give Dom Sibley from Warwickshire a try. 74 vs Australia A, 191 balls. Sounds like he could stick around longer than some. If you're good enough you're old enough.

England have got to look at their squad and see how they can get picked up for Lord's.

Australia have Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to come in so can freshen up their team if they want to.

Australia captain Tim Paine, speaking to Test Match Special: "We struggled on day one but addressed a few things between innings and we batted and bowled very well after that.

"One thing that Ricky Ponting taught me ages ago was to always bat first because it's always easier to bat on day one than on day five.

"Steve Smith has been unbelievable, not just this week but in the last five or six weeks too. He makes guys better. He's one of the best Test batsmen we've seen and he seems to be getting even better.

"It speak a lot to his character as well. He's been through a tough time and copped it all day, every day in England for the past three to four months. It shows incredible mental strength and concentration to get through that and together with the skill he has, he's an amazing package.

"Everyone is going to cop it in England. It doesn't really matter and we've spoken about how to cope with it."

In other, sad news, Dale Steyn has just announced his retirement from Test cricket.

At least England won't have to face him this winter in South Africa.

Duke and Kookaburra: Three green tops required for the next three Tests; no lateral movement means no trouble for Smith. Odds on a home win this series just took a nosedive.

How are England going to stop Smith scoring runs at Lord's? Tie his legs together? Answers on a postcard.

Australia batsman Matthew Wade on Steve Smith: "I don't think anyone knows the emotions he goes through at times. I only heard in the press a couple of days ago that he was thinking about giving the game away. He just gets into his own little world. He's a special player."

Steve Smith is a craftsman and an exhibitionist on how to score runs in all conditions.

If it moves around though, England will they might be able to snick him off cheaply. He'll get two or three more hundreds in this series but if there is a bit of swing, the seamers will fancy their chances a few times.

Steve Smith is one of the greatest ever because he never, ever gets bored of scoring runs. Brian Lara is one of the greatest, but you did think he made have a late night sometimes and lose focus. Smith doesn't.

More from Joe Root to TMS, on Steve Smith: "He has got to start again at Lord's and we have to make it very difficult for him to get in.

"He's very greedy when gets in and makes big scores. We have to exploit his mistakes when we can."

    BBC Test Match Special

More from Joe Root to TMS, on James Anderson: "He passed every fitness Test, we went about it how you normally would. It's one of those freak things, he pulled up in the middle of a game. The other bowlers work extremely hard to take it up but we weren't able to build enough pressure.

"It's easy in hindsight - Jimmy went through every medical check absolutely fine and it was a unanimous decision from all parties. Sometimes things go against you and you have to find a way of getting through the game. It was a fantastic effort considering we were a bowler down and we have to not dwell on it.

"We miss a bowler of Jimmy's calibre. He has a fantastic record on this ground and against Australia in England. We are still very capable of taking wickets and being more competitive than we were here in the rest of the series."

Nathan Lyon has just said it's "important Australia celebrate a win at the Fortress".

Just rubbing it in a little bit more there.

More from player of the match Steve Smith: "The first 100 was pretty emotional. I had to take a few deep breaths and take it in. It was a pretty special moment, probably almost as special as my first hundred for Australia. Hopefully I can keep contributing throughout the series.

"Its been a long 18 months for me and my family and friends and they helped me through it back home. I'm really thankful for that. I don't know if it's really sunk in yet.

"It's been a hell of a six weeks. I've really enjoyed playing here in the World Cup then this Ashes series is the ultimate challenge for an Australian and English cricketer."

  18. Player of the match - Steve Smithpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 5 August 2019

Player of the match Steve Smith: "Pretty special. I'm grateful to be here playing in another Ashes series. I love playing cricket in England. The atmosphere is always amazing. We were in a really good position overnight. Gazza [Lyon] came out and did his thing beautifully. To go 1-0 up in the series is a big boost.

"Maybe a while ago I thought that [he wouldn't be playing again] but I'm really grateful to be back here playing for Australia, scoring runs, doing what I love and contributing to wins. It's been a pretty special comeback. I'm over the moon to be standing here."

England captain Joe Root, speaking to Test Match Special: "It's frustrating, I thought we could get through the day.

"Australia bowled really well - the majority of dismissal we were got out. We have to take it on the chin and come back hard at Lord's.

"We got ourselves in a really strong position with them at 122-8 but credit to Steve Smith, he batted exceptionally well through the Test match.

"But even after the first innings we were in a good position and it's one of those things where we have to have to have a look and we have to respond better in those positions."
