Make Woakes England batting coach?
Cliff
Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special
Both captains missed a trick in not playing a second spinner.
Oh, Jimmy, Jimmy!
Chris Woakes gives him one ball to survive at the end of Nathan Lyon's over and England's number 11 edges through slip for four.

The skies are looking very dark over the University of Birmingham, and the clouds are heading your way.....
Dr Rik Bryan
Here are those two wickets in two balls that have put Australia on the brink of taking the lead in an Ashes series in England for the first time since 2005.

David Alcock: There's an old familiar feeling from looking at the cricket scorecard.
Tom Simpson: Who would have thought that when these two were last batting that England go onto lose the test by well over 200 runs.
Jake Conlon: Bernie Ecclestone once suggested placing sprinklers at the side of F1 tracks to randomly simulate rain, couldn’t a few of the groundsmen at Edgebaston do the same thing for us?
Australia need one wicket to win
Jimmy Anderson is capable of hobbling a single. He gets through at the end of the over and that means Chris Woakes keeps the strike.

Steve Smith, of all people.
Steve Smith makes a mistake! He has shelled the chance to catch Chris Woakes at second slip.
The ball goes for four too.

Australia need one wicket to win
Well batted, Jimmy. The crowd sings his name. I suggested Woakes would try and get a single to keep the strike but we haven't seen any evidence yet that Anderson could run through for a single.

Now looks like a great decision to bat first.
John Adams
Australia have three slips to a spinner. Anderson is doing his best.

England's batting used to be the model of conservativism and sensibility now it's just the model of idiocy. The problems start with the captain. Roots a good bat but a woeful captain who cracks under too pressure. Root should go.
James from London
48 overs remaining
The field comes in at the end of Siddle's over and Woakes can't get a single to keep the strike. It'll be Nathan Lyon to James Anderson next.
Will this be the end?
