  1. 'Smith is probably best we've ever seen'published at 15:40 British Summer Time 5 August 2019

Australia captain Tim Paine on being 122-8: "I thought we were certainly up against it at that stage but we had the best player in the world at the crease. Steve showed his class in both innings. We're running out of things to say about Smithy. He's probably the best Test batsman we've ever seen. We'e lucky to witness it.

"Nathan bowled superbly but our three quicks took a lot of pressure off him at the other end as well. The seamers were sensational. We thought we could improve on our first-innings performance with the ball. All those guys are world class performers. This morning all four of them were sensational.

"We know every Test we play in England, the crowd will be against us. I thought the guys handled themselves really well and we've come out on top."

You can't be critical of how England batted in the first innings. They ground the bowlers down and batted time.

To not have your best bowler for the entire Test and your spinner not producing, it's very difficult.

England were playing with nine and a half men. If England had Graeme Swann at his peak, they would've won this. If James Anderson had played, the margin of victory for Australia would've been much lower.

Has so much ever rested on the shoulders of someone who has never played a Test? Jofra Archer will surely play for England at Lord's next week.

There's no surprise who wins man of the match on his return to Test cricket.

You need your spinner to produce on this wicket and Moeen Ali wasn't good enough this week.

If the ball doesn't move laterally, this series has mess written all over it for England.

If it's slow and low and you're reliant on your spinner, England are going to struggle. Australia have a world-class spinner in Nathan Lyon.

  7. 'Bitterly disappointing'published at 15:35 British Summer Time 5 August 2019

England captain Joe Root at the presentation: "It does hurt. It is bitterly disappointing. We played really good cricket in the majority of the Test match. Credit to Australia. They fought hard to get back in it.

"[Steve Smith played] two brilliant innings. We have to keep working hard to get him out. Obviously it was hard that we lost Jimmy early on. These things happen. We have to take it on the chin and come back hard at Lords.

On Jimmy Anderson’s fitness: “It was a group decision to select him. He passed all of the fitness tests. It is one of those freak things that happen in cricket. It is disappointing. We have got to respond to that and get things right.”

The World Cup will have taken it out of them, though. High-level sport can be really draining.

Without lateral movement, Australia are going to wipe the floor with England because they have Steve Smith and a quality spinner in Nathan Lyon.

You cannot get Smith out on a slow pitch.

People will be screaming at the radio, Michael, asking how can these players need lifting to play in an Ashes series.

England won't point fingers. Jimmy will put his hand up. When a bowler of that experience says he's fit, you've got to go with him.

It might come from this Test that any bowler coming back from an injury has to come through a match before they play a Test.

Emotionally, I have a concern about two or three of the England players trying to play in an Ashes so soon after the high of the World Cup.

Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler look shot.

We have witnessed a great player in Steve Smith. England have played with 10 men. When you've got James Anderson injured and Moeen Ali horribly out of form, it makes it very, very difficult.

Smith and Nathan Lyon were the real difference between the two teams.

Richie Macca: Buttler, Bairstow and Ali scored 24 runs in that Test. In a team where our strength lies in the middle order, that is nowhere near good enough.

There are so many question for England now.

Do they drop Moeen? D they make more changes with the batting line-up? How do they get Smith out? What sort of pitches do they want? How do they play Lyon? How do they play the Aussie quicks?

When you lose Rory Burns early and when it started to spin, it's so hard to bat on a day five pitch.
