I remember Harmison getting his 8-for, but I don't remember it being that quick, you could get a sense of the crowd, it was like when all the bars emptied because Freddie arrived out in the middle. I have never seen the ground like it was today for a bowler. It was an amazing atmosphere.

Steve Smith did come back out and reached 92, before he was trapped lbw by Chris Woakes. Australia were ultimately dismissed for 250, still trailing England by eight.

Archer's spell today may not have broken Aussie bones, but it certainly will have damaged some minds for the rest of the series.

It's so hard to call these matches because you just know teams are going to collapse and subside. That spell from Archer was as quick as I have seen for a while.

After lunch, Jofra Archer and Steve Smith produced one of those most enthralling, terrifying, electric, gripping pieces of Test cricket that you could wish to see. Smith is, thankfully, okay after taking a sickening blow to the neck.

I still can't quite believe that he came back out.

Great day, lovely day for Test cricket, it was captivating, it had pretty much everything. The quality, particularly from Archer and Cummins was right up there with anything you can see in terms of pace bowling. I think we could be in for a really special day tomorrow.

It feels like a lifetime ago that Steve Smith and Matthew Wade strolled out, with Australia resuming on 80-4.

It was a slow morning session for England.

    Lead by 104

An ungainly sort of drive from Ben Stokes, clubbing Pat Cummins through cover, but he's got enough on it to take England's lead to the 100 mark.

Four! Cummins loses his line and Stokes shovels him off his hip and away for an easy four.

Just met a bloke in Swanage who claims to be Steve Smith's great uncle on his English side. Not sure whether this is a pub wind up, or a genuine coincidence! In case this in truthful I've asked the great question of 'how do we get him out'. Awaiting response...!

    Peter Harris, Swanage.

It's so hard for the left-handers when you have that rough just outside the line of off stump.
