Ben Stokes, that is a brave leave!

Oh, only a bit of extra bounce has stopped Nathan Lyon rearranging his off stump. My word. Stokes promptly inside-edges the next ball onto his pads. He struggles so much against Lyon.

A neat flick off the pads brings Jos Buttler and England another couple of runs.

That's a good ball - a hint of movement back up the slope. Buttler has to play at that. It's the kind of wicket where you know you're going to play and miss at a few.

  5. Eng 87-4published at 28.4 overs

Jos Buttler pushes forward and gets his outside edge tickled by a rising delivery from Pat Cummins. That's some ball.

"Come on, Patrick!" chirps Tim Paine from behind the stumps - and the tall paceman promptly spears four byes down the leg side.

Denly is the anti-Smith. Pretty but ineffective.

Misdirected from Nathan Lyon, drifting in to Jos Buttler's pads, and Buttler tickles it around the corner for a handy couple of runs.

    Tidy, quiet stuff from everyone.

Ben Stokes is just losing his bat shape, looks to me he is holding the bottom hand a bit too tightly.

  9. Eng 78-4published at 25 overs

    Stokes 8, Buttler 4

A maiden from Pat Cummins to Ben Stokes. Stokes doesn't look like he wants to play anything too adventurous.

England are very fortunate that the Aussies can't catch, Warner is having one of those series where nothing is going to hand. It has just looked a little frantic from an England perspective, you almost feel they are trying to get 180-200 in front. I wouldn't want to be chasing 180 on here but England could have been six or seven down by now.

  11. Eng 78-4published at 24.4 overs

Stokes is hit on the thigh by Cummins and doesn't have the slightest clue where the ball has gone. It's on the pitch next to his feet but Stokes is stepping down the pitch asking Buttler about a single. He's sent back.

So the arm issue won't keep Smith out of the next Test.

Pat Cummins is coming back. He took 2-8 from five overs in his first spell.

    Gulp.

Nathan Lyon tosses up the ball, trying to tempt Jos Buttler into a belting drive, but Buttler can't beat the man at mid-on.

    That'll be a maiden.

Joe Root has to bat at four so does Denly then go to three? Someone has to go to three and they have to back them.

That was always going to be a feature of the series - who was going to scramble enough runs?

Peter Siddle is causing havoc. Another leading edge, this time from Ben Stokes, but he's somehow managed to shuffle it over Travis Head at square leg.

Buttler leaves, leaves, and then drives an easy single away. He and Stokes have got half an hour to survive.

Stokes is an attacking player and might feel like he needs to play outside the off stump, which really brings Lyon into play.
