The bowlers are feeling the pressure, they are striving to bowl faster, harder. And they are losing it!

All the pressure, it makes so much difference to the middle order when you have a platform. All that work the two Joes did yesterday.

    Target 359

    Five wides! FIVE WIDES!

A horrid delivery from James Pattinson who hurls it down barely on the cut strip and it nutmegs David Warner at first slip before streaking away to the fence.

Do the England fans not like that? They love it.

Jonny Bairstow tucks the last ball off his hips for two more.

The ball deflects very fine off Jonny Bairstow's thigh for four leg byes.

I've just got the feeling - we're not stupid, we know it's a tall order - but there are some pitches, some days when they are not going to get them.

Today there is the sniff of a chance. Talent is not a problem in many of these England players. What has been lacking is the concentration and patience.

Look at this crowd! Joe Root should look at that. When England bat well, and play properly, the people are behind them.

James Pattinson returns in place of Pat Cummins.

That spell from Cummins was far from his best. You can bet he'll be back later.

Now Ben Stokes drives back past the bowler, not as crisp as Jonny Bairstow's and he picks up two.

    Oh hello, that is sumptuous.

Jonny Bairstow drives back down the ground for four. Josh Hazlewood even got a hand on it and couldn't stop it zipping away to the fence.

Is there a single pitch in the world that Geoffrey Boycott wouldn't back himself to bat well on?

This is Headingley on a good day - sun shining, a dry pitch. I'd like a bat on that.

Pat Cummins bangs it in short and wide and Ben Stokes throws his hands at it.

There's just a chance they can win. It's not easy, but that's what records are there for - they are made to be broken.

Not the first hour England would've wanted, given Joe Root is back in the hutch.

But still plenty of defiance on show.

Jonny Bairstow leaves the last alone to a big round of applause.
