Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Try and make sure England get themselves into the afternoon with a chance of winning the game. The only way they can do that is a lot of hard work in the morning session.

Perhaps England's performance yesterday will prove to just be temporary paper over the cracks of all the batting issues highlighted by that woeful 67 in the first innings.

But the paper is shiny and has a jazzy pattern and England fans would like to keep looking at it for a long time today.

You hope Joe Root slept well. What a responsibility on his shoulders today.

There was a mix of nerves and excitement on my train to Headingley this morning. Most people standing, arms folded, saying very little, while a few others make bold predictions. Will they see history?

  5. Welcomepublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 25 August 2019

Welcome to live coverage of day four of the third Ashes Test between England and Australia at Headingley.

So yesterday England did everything they should've done in their first innings in their second innings instead, after being set 359 to win and level the series.

Joe Denly was brave in scrapping to 50, Joe Root's touch looks to have returned at last and the England captain will start today on 75 not out, while Ben Stokes is there on a stoic two off 50 balls.

England are 156-3, needing 203 more for what would be a staggering win.

Australia need seven wickets to retain the Ashes.

What is it? You know the feeling, but is there a word for it?

That feeling of just sitting there, watching your team fight a hopeless cause in a Test match.

Another over. No wicket. A couple of runs. Stout defence. Good. More please.

You go quiet. You daren't move. You stop messaging your friends about the game.

Just chipping away. Still no hope, but good to battle. Wait. Is that hope creeping in?
