    Target 359

Ben Stokes is on two off 66 balls. Remarkable.

Yikes. James Pattinson goes over the wicket and pushes it across, getting Stokes playing and missing. Good cherry that.

    On we go.

Phil Noyes: Hoping that: 1. My 88-year-old mum (at the game, though not playing) gets to see a full day of cricket. 2. England still have a chance to win the Ashes. 3. The excitement doesn't kill her. 4. She doesn't run on as a streaker.

  3. Eng 157-3published at 76.2 overs

It's taken 26 balls and finally England have their first run of the day!

Joe Root pushes wide of point and scurries a single.

It's greeted like he's just reached his ton.

I think the Aussie fans thought the pieces of helmet flying in the air were the bails. They were up on their feet cheering. The England fans respond with a sarcastic "waaaaaay".

Stokes is indeed fine to continue and leaves the last outside off.

    Still no run this morning.

It always worries me when bits come off the helmet so easily - they could hit the stumps and you'd be bowled.

Youch. Ben Stokes takes a short ball right between the brim and the grille of his helmet.

It absolutely cracked him and knocked the stem guards off the back of the lid, which landed clear of the stumps.

Stokes just swivelled and shook it off. Nails.

He'll need a check over but he looks fine.

I checked out of my hotel this morning thinking that there would definitely be a result today, either way. But if England keep batting at this rate...

They've scored 39 runs off the last 31 overs.

  11. Eng 156-3published at 75.2 overs

Eek. Ben Stokes whips a ball off his pads and nearly hits it straight to Travis Head at a close in square leg. A yard either way and it was four. Fortunately for England, it drops short of Head.

    Pattinson 15-5-23-0

James Pattinson lets out a yelp of anguish and stares at Joe Root after the England captain defends one down off the inner portion of the bat. Solid enough.

The last climbs at Root and he fends it down off the glove.

    Well bowled. Well played.

A third straight maiden in a row to start the day.

It's noticeable how full the Western Terrace is this morning. Yesterday, they came in dribs and drabs. Today, there are very few spare seats. The importance of the morning is not lost on anyone.

Where does the previous day's ball spend the night? My other half says it stays in the umpire's pocket but this seems uncomfortable for sleeping. Is he telling porkies?

    Root 75, Stokes 2

Ben Stokes goes to leave and ends up middling one from Josh Hazlewood. Good sign?

    That's another maiden.

They were playing a montage of England celebrations from recent Tests on the big screens at the ground earlier. I’ve got goosebumps and I don’t think I’m the only one. This is big.

Joe Root firmly in behind with some immaculate forward defence.

I genuinely believe that Tim Paine reckons the louder you appeal, the more likely it is the umpire will give it out.

Joe Root gets nowhere near a ball down the leg side and the Aussie captain yells for caught behind.

Joel Wilson shakes his head. Paine has a brief chat with James Pattinson about a review and opts against it.

He is then jeered by the crowd when they see the replay.
