I did hear that, 10 minutes out from the toss, Australia were going to have a bat. I don't know what happened in the 10 minutes after that. Mark Taylor used to say 95% of the time, you go out and bat first. The other 5%, you think about bowling, and then bat anyway.

    Root 40, Stokes 20

Glenn is correct. Marsh is indeed getting nice shape back into the left-handed Stokes.

But England's number four is playing late and clipping it nicely off his pads for a couple more.

Mitchell Marsh has always been the type of bowler that hits the deck hard, bowls good areas, but he's swinging the ball more than I've seen before.

What about using Mitchell Marsh too much too early?

Australia's fourth seamer returns for his third over.

It's usually an admission from a captain that he might have got the decision to bowl first wrong if you use the spinner too much too early.

    We've done the maths, Nigel.

Steve Smith has 671 runs in the Ashes so far.

The Ashes started 42 days ago and Peter Siddle apparently gets through up to 20 bananas a day - making a quite staggering maximum of 840 in total.

If Smith bats twice in this Test, it could be close.

Since the Ashes started on 1st August, what is higher: The number of runs Steve Smith has scored, or the number of bananas Peter Siddle has eaten?

The batsmen don't realise how easy they get it, fielding in the slips. Fine leg to fine leg is a long day!

  10. Eng 123-2published at 36.2 overs

Ben Stokes makes it back-to-back boundaries as he plays late and glances past gully to the fence.

The collective purr from The Oval crowd as Ben Stokes flayed that drive for four was... an experience.

Pat Cummins returns to the attack and Ben Stokes greets him by whipping a drive back down the ground for four.

    Root 39, Stokes 8

Ben Stokes takes a tumble as he tries to turn for a second run and Joe Root spots it early enough that he doesn't strand himself halfway down the pitch.

This pitch has a little more bounce than anything we've seen this series.

A big appeal for lbw against Joe Root. Not given because he nicked it into his pads.

But Peter Siddle and Tim Paine didn't spot that and chat about the review before deciding against.

Marais Erasmus saw it and duly does not signal a leg bye as Root picks up a single.

An old chap in the pavilion has just peeled back the silver foil from his sandwiches. There's a black bag underneath his seat hinting at more food. He has already opened a tube of crisps, which is alongside two full pints and a flask for a hot drink. He has binoculars around his neck and a newspaper for the sedate periods. He is absolutely living the dream.
