Aussie heads in hands. It has only taken until the fifth Test.

Here are the two drops of Joe Root...

England couldn't wish for anything better than being 86-1 at lunch after being put in. Those dropped chances don't matter.

    Burns 42, Root 28

Rory Burns ducks the final ball of the over. He's made it to lunch alongside Joe Root.

One of England's best batting sessions of the series? Probably.

One more reason why The Oval is great: its beer mugs. They have hollow handles, which is good for two reasons. One, the handles can be stacked, meaning you can carry about four in one hand. Two, your hands don't get cold when you're drinking....

  6. Eng 86-1published at 24.3 overs

Rory Burns gets right in behind a Pat Cummins bouncer. Good batting.

    Lyon's over it too short.

We have four minutes to go until lunch. This will probably be the last over.

Charlie Rhodes: A big positive out of a gloomy series, is the coming of age of Rory Burns. A proper Test opener who’s happy sticking around. Possible future England captain?

I mean... Here's yet another misfield from Australia, this time from Pat Cummins. It doesn't cost a run but it just adds to the sloppy feel.

Spinner Nathan Lyon is on for a bowl in the first session of the first day of a Test.

Both of the drops have been off Pat Cummins. He is probably feeling a tad annoyed.

    Excellent shot.

  15. Eng 84-1published at 22.5 overs

Australia have not been their usual selves this morning. Not at all.

Cummins now goes too full and Rory Burns drives beautifully for four. That's the shot of the day.

Is it me or have Australia gone a bit... England in every Ashes tour down under? Two dropped catches in the space of five minutes. The crowd love it. Tim Paine, less so.

  18. dropped catch

Root dropped on 25published at 22.2 overs

Would you believe it?! Joe Root is dropped for a second time in a few overs.

Australia captain Tim Paine is the culprit this time. He goes with one glove in an ungainly fashion to try and catch an edge from in front of David Warner's face at first slip.

You have to think Warner would have taken it comfortably.

Australia should have stuck with Mitchell Starc. Batsmen are going to score runs off you at The Oval - it's the fastest surface and the best batting deck in England. It's about taking wickets.

  20. Eng 79-1published at 22 overs

    Burns 38, Root 25

It's a lovely day at The Oval now. A lovely day for Joe Root to keep batting...
