  1. Eng 89-1published at 26.4 overs

Settle yourself down, Joseph Edward Root.

Another loose drive and Josh Hazlewood beats the outside edge.

Not the one straight after the interval and especially not after nearly nicking off the over before. Play yourself back in first.

Breaking: Steve Smith is mortal after all.

Dropped again! Steve Smith has done something wrong! It's unbelievable. He had to get a good dive out and Root had gone after it hard. It was a healthy edge and Smith will be disappointed with that.

Root dropped on 30published at 26 overs

Misfortune is happening in threes for Australia.

Would you believe it, they've dropped Joe Root again - and this time it's Steve Smith!

A tough chance but grabbable, Smith diving to his right at second slip as Root gets a big outside edge on Peter Siddle's last ball of the over.

A third life for the England captain.

That would have been an interesting lunch break - the fast bowlers looking at the captain and going "skip, did you mean to win the toss and bowl?"

  6. Eng 88-1published at 25.2 overs

Peter Siddle targets Joe Root's pads and the England captain gets under way after lunch with a thick outside edge down to wide fine leg for a couple.

Time to do it all over again.

Players back out in the middle.

Peter Siddle to Joe Root first up after lunch.

    Here we go...

Now we have found Burns, all we need is another opener, a reliable number 3 or 4 (depending on where Root bats), two more batsmen in the middle order, a replacement bowler for Anderson when he retires, and then we have the beginnings of a great Test team!

Joe Root has had two lives but otherwise looked in better nick than last time out, his feet moving nicely.

Who the heck opens with Rory Burns? Where could Chris Woakes slot in? Do you go with three or four seamers?

No, not ongoing England selection headaches but the questions you must ask yourself when picking your combined England-Australia Ashes XI here.

You'd think there are certain choices that are totally nailed on, but I saw someone refuse to put either Pat Cummins or Josh Hazlewood in their team earlier.

Old Trafford still hurts for England fans.

Glorious sunshine now over The Oval. Excellent batting conditions.

    How is England's haymaking ability?

    Thanks Matt.

Well, that was a very positive morning. Exactly what England needed after the disappointment of Old Trafford.

Can they keep it going though?

Trying to be positive, but have that nervous feeling that England get 350 all out, then the Aussies bat and score 500+.
