Siddle has some bowling to do now. Rory Burns pushes him for two through the covers.

    The 50 partnership is up.

A big cheer for Siddle as he returns to fine leg. He gives the crowd a thumbs up in response.

Re Jaffa Cakes being a cake or a biscuit... A court decided in the 90s it was a cake not a biscuit - one of the deciding factors being when it goes stale it goes hard, unlike biscuits which go soft!

Remember what we said about Root's front-foot desire making him susceptible to the bumper...

Siddle now gets some ironic cheers from the crowd as he successfully completes his fielding this time.

Has he just dropped the Ashes win?!

Peter Siddle has just stood at fine leg and watched himself drop that catch from three different angles, courtesy of the big screen. I’m not sure it’s done much for his mood.

Oh! He's dropped it! He should've caught that quite comfortably.

Root dropped on 24published at 20.2 overs

Peter Siddle's poor morning continues! He has dropped a sitter. It's the important wicket of Joe Root too.

The England captain top-edges a pull shot just to Siddle's right at deep fine leg and the Aussie bowler takes a a few steps to his right but spills the waist-high catch.

He'd take that catch nine times out of 10. At least.

To add to the point about Joe Root trying hard to get on the front foot, he's well outside of his crease when facing Peter Siddle.

  12. Eng 71-1published at 20 overs

Peter Siddle puts his hands onto his grey-tinged hair after a ball swings a little but Rory Burns gets a couple off an inside edge into the leg side.

The England opener then chases a ridiculously wide ball. David Warner is grinning at slip at the shot from Burns...

Fenners: Denly is certainly gone after this. Not done enough and time to give younger guys a chance. Pope, Sibley and Northeast should be on the plane to NZ. Start planning for the next Ashes now.

One of the best things about cricket is the conversations you get yourself involved in. We've just had a 10 minute discussion about whether Jaffa Cakes are a cake or a biscuit.

    Burns 28, Root 25

Nathan Lyon was warming his arms up a moment ago and now he gets his legs going by chasing down a Root drive, pulling it up just before the boundary.

Root has been helped by some wayward bowling but he looks a lot more like the player England fans love today. He's been busy and is scoring at a good rate.

Rory Burns has 28 from 49 balls with five fours. This might have been the best of them.

Putting England in may turn out to be the 16th worst decision ever by Tim Paine.

It's early but this decision at the toss really doesn't look like the right one from Tim Paine. Burns and Root look comfortable.

Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Peter Siddle has been off his game so far. He's been a bit short, a bit wide and Joe Root has just helped himself.
