The Oval Test match always makes me a bit sad. It means that summer is coming to an end.

Wonderfully relaxed post-lunch atmosphere at The Oval. Sunshine for the first time in what feels like an age, spectators taking their time underneath the stands. A choice of wines, artisan foods, ice cream. End-of-school feel.

I'm not saying I'm getting grumpier and grumpier, but when I'm in charge, people who stand up in the middle of the over will get a ruddy good telling off from someone.

Hmm. Joe Root charges down the pitch at Peter Siddle and ends up just tucking off his pads for no run.

    Hmm.

England are in a fabulous position to suck the life out of the seamers on a flat pitch. They have got to get 400.

  6. Eng 102-1published at 29.3 overs

Ooooh what a gorgeous way to get off the mark after lunch as Rory Burns pushes a cover drive perfectly between two fielders to the fence.

And it was a no ball! More cheers from the home crowd.

That takes England past 100 for the loss of only one wicket. Rare areas.

That's 7,000 Test runs for Joe Root. He's the 12th Englishman to get there and third youngest overall - only Alastair Cook and Sachin Tendulkar were younger.

  9. Eng 97-1published at 29 overs

    Burns 42, Root 35

Shot! That's the ball to drive! Josh Hazlewood pushes it very full and Joe Root crashes it square to the fence.

That four takes Root on to 7,000 Test runs exactly.

We might have found an opener at long last - it's only taken three and a half years to find one!

Rory Burns has been a big tick for the summer. I think he's got better as the series has gone on. That hundred at Edgbaston was grit and determination. He didn't look good at times during that.

Rory Burns still not off the mark after lunch, just a couple of leg byes off his pads.

Maybe that's why he dropped the catch. You won't see that hat again!

Matt Oswin: Joe Root must be batting with a rabbit's foot.

Mlgraham73: Enjoyable as these Aussie drops are, this isn’t great batting from Root once again.

    Josh Hazlewood completes a maiden.

England have played nicely but when they fancy having a pop at that cover drive or off drive, it can just bring the edge into play.
