Speaking of Steve Smith, I'm sure you've all seen this picture of him during Australia's post-match celebrations last week by now.

Was he wearing glasses, while his team-mates reportedly shouted "no-ball", to mock Jack Leach?

Or was it a left-field reference to the bespectacled former Australia opener Chris Rogers, as has been claimed.

    Make your own minds up.

  2. Can Smith make history?published at 10:43 British Summer Time 12 September 2019

If England are going to take some pride from this match then they're probably going to have to do the impossible and get Steve Smith out cheaply.

The Australia batsman took his runs tally to 671 in the last Test at a remarkable average of 134.20.

He needs 303 runs in this match to break the great Don Bradman's record for most runs in a Test series.

    He couldn't, could he?

The things you see on the way to The Oval. There's probably some sort of gag in there about Steve Smith's batting being from another planet....

I'd be worried if I had day five tickets for this match. There is no rain forecast, the pitch is a little green, and a couple of players aside, neither team can bat.

    Could be entertaining!

Australia feel they have England on the run. That is a big, big call from Paine at the toss. I can understand it with the cloud around but the pitch is dry underneath.

You could argue that Tim Paine having a bowl first, when the conditions and pitch seem to screaming for someone to bat on, says a lot about how little faith he has in England’s batting line up. Root says he’d have had a bat first anyway.

Australia captain Tim Paine:"It's a little bit overcast. If it was sunny, we'd have had a bat but there's grass on the pitch and hopefully we can take advantage."

England captain Joe Root: "We'd have looked to bat first anyway. It looks a good wicket. There is live grass so it might move around a little bit early on but it's dry underneath. We can't win the Ashes back this week but we can draw the series. There's plenty of incentive there and we'll do everything we can to win this game. We've been blessed with some wonderful support this summer and we feel like we want to do well for our supporters too."

As we already knew, Mitchell Marsh is in for Travis Head.

Yet again Tim Paine wins the toss.

Michael Holding is conducting the toss interviews, which has led Alec Stewart to reminisce, in great detail, about the time Holding broke his jaw. “Not that I’m still thinking about it, obviously.” Very much feels like a bat, bat and bat sort of day...

The England Test team needs remodeling and it can start here. I would bat first there is a bit of green grass but it is dry. Batting first has been the way to go in this series.

I wonder if England will have a sneaky look at a bowl.

  18. Changes for both teamspublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 12 September 2019

We already know that both teams will make changes for this Test.

England have named their XI with Chris Woakes recalled in place of Craig Overton and last year's player of the series Sam Curran, who has not played a game in this Ashes campaign, in for Jason Roy.

That final change is because Ben Stokes is playing as a specialist batsman due to injury so England wanted Curran in as their all-rounder.

Australia have recalled all-rounder Mitchell Marsh to their squad with Travis Head dropped but it's not yet clear which bowling line-up they'll go with.

  19. England must build for next Ashes - Rootpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 12 September 2019

The 'where did it go wrong' pieces have already been written this week. The debrief has started.

On Twitter some England fans are calling for wholesale changes. Others just want minor alterations.

Captain Joe Root wants to stay on and he says the planning for the next Ashes series in Australia in 2021-22 has to start now.

It's not the finale we were all hoping for but here we are at The Oval for the final match of this incredible international summer.

Australia retained the Ashes last week with their win at Manchester but the series is still alive.

England can still show some fight, spoil the Aussie party just a little by winning this week to draw the series 2-2.

    Game on?
