Well then, he is human. That is a big blow for Australia.
I feel for Simon Mann - he really wanted that wicket.

I cannot believe what we have just witnessed. Steve Smith has missed one on his pads. It was an innocuous delivery!
Smith lbw b Woakes 80 (Aus 187-8)
STEVE SMITH HAS MISSED IT. HE'S OUT!
The Oval is stunned. This is a ball that Smith usually flicks away off his pads all day long but for once he has missed the ball. Amazing.
I can't believe it and I'm not sure Woakes can either. That was a regulation straight ball.
Sam Curran's fine spell is done. England turn to Chris Woakes.

Lewis Squires: I think both teams have missed out by not playing Starc and Curran more all series. That inswinging left arm delivery is a nightmare for any batsman.

A maiden from Jack Leach. Peter Siddle looks comfortable against England's spinner.
It's late in the day, the shadows are lengthening, some of the bodies will be weary out there as we head towards the end of the series but this is a big final hour in this match.
Jack Leach continues after drinks...

Tim Miller: Broad brings it for the Ashes but perhaps Curran is the rightful heir to his spot in the side. And he (Curran) can bat!
But Steve Smith is still there. He's closing on fourth century of the series.
He offered one chance but Joe Root put it down.
Here are the three wickets since tea...

There's less drama in this over than Curran's previous few. That's drinks and everyone can have a breather after a frantic last 45 minutes.
Curran looks like he's loving this. He's moving his field around before changing to round the wicket.

Kieron Bird: If Archer and Curran continue the way they're going, we might be able to come close to replacing Broad and Anderson when they retire after all.
Good fielding from Jofra Archer prevents Steve Smith getting a second run at the start of the over. He's into the 80s but Peter Siddle is on strike now. A chance for England.

You look at Smith and then realise Bradman was even more consistent. He averaged almost 100 - it's just incredible.
A tidy over from Jack Leach but with little spin there's not too much threat. Peter Siddle happily plants his front foot forward.
Sam Curran must be puffing but he's continuing.

Archer took 1-18 in that seven-over spell.
Jofra Archer's spell is done. Jack Leach is on.

Batting in the last innings here is going to be really hard work. Tim Paine would like that toss back.
Smith 76, Siddle 5
What a spell this is. Sam Curran is causing havoc with the Australia right-handers. He's swinging the ball back in and hitting the pad again and again. Another lbw appeal is turned down. This one was a little closer than the last but still a good decision.
