50 for Hopepublished at 27 overs

    WI 149-3

Shai Hope swivels through mid-wicket for two to take him to 49.

And he pulls the next out to the man at deep backward square leg to jog the single that brings him 50 off 76 balls.

It was a cautious start as Hope had to battle against the short ball from Australia's fast bowlers but he dug in admirably and has started to find some fluency.

One of the best batsmen in the world to watch in full flow.

It's interesting how old-fashioned cricket came to the fore as soon as the World Cup began. An innings like this from Shai Hope is just as valuable as a 50-ball century.

    Shai Hope is all class.

First, Nathan Coulter-Nile strays straight and Hope flicks it fine for four.

Second, Hope unfurls a sublime cover drive. Oh it's gorgeous and brings him four more.

    Poise. Timing. Balance. Yes.

If these two get West Indies above 200, you feel Andre Russell could blast the last 80 on his own.

If West Indies can get to 200 or 220 with this partnership, it makes it so much easier for the next batsmen in. It keeps the pressure on Australia.

    Target 289

Shai Hope taps a single and Adam Zampa then beats the outside edge of Shimron Hetmyer's bat with a googly that bites off the surface.

And another play and miss at a wrong'un!

Hetmyer isn't missing that though as he wallops a sweep shot away to the fence off the last ball.

    Cheers Jamie.

Cracking match so far - will it have a thrilling ending? Here's hoping.

Adam Zampa continues to Shai Hope...

With the Windies worm ahead of Australia, it's a good time to hand to Jack Skelton for the remainder of the contest.

Coulter-Nile traps Hetmyer high on the pad, there is a tentative appeal but no chance of Australia using their review. West Indies still have theirs after Gayle was out to a decision deemed umpire's call. Nothing tentative about the next one, a savage pull from the young left-hander bringing him a second four.

As a Scot (never having played cricket before), I waited in anticipation for over six hours in the blazing Maharastran heat for my first experience as a batsman back in 2005. Padded, I strolled to the middle, took my line and stood ready to cut away an elegant four. A bird flew down and knocked my bail off, but the umpire missed it and declared I had 'fallen on wicket'...never ever played again.

    Hope 36, Hetmyer 12

Hope smashes Zampa for two boundaries into the leg side, Coulter-Nile unable to scoop in the second of them on the boundary and treated to some ironic cheers when the ball comes to him again from the next delivery.

We saw some stylish strokes from Pooran. This hook was not one of his best but it brought him six runs, although he departed to a mis-timed drive.

A quick bouncer from Starc but Hetmyer is quick on his toes and pulls it venomously to the mid-wicket fence, before clipping a low full toss for a single to retain the strike.

Two more for Hetmyer, driving Zampa to deep cover and the innings reaches Nelson. The Australians are not concerned - and they are more wary of the number 87 of course.
