England will be very happy with the start. It was important they got off to a good start and they have shown some nounce and have played smart cricket.

It is not easy starting against Shakib. England looked much more confident against the medium pace at the other end.

Continuing the musical theme and part of the tournament features a guitar made out of a cricket bat being played for the enjoyment of the crowd, although a few look a bit bemused by it. Now here's something you don't see every day, Bairstow clips to wide mid-wicket and the fleet-footed England openers run four. A loose one from Shakib is smartly put away to a similar area by Bairstow but they don't have to run for this one as it races over the rope.

For our younger viewers, Bucks Fizz were a popular beat combo at their zenith in the early eighties. But are we allowed to mention Eurovision after the latest debacle?

  4. Eng 52-0published at 8 overs

    Roy 33, Bairstow 18

Mohammad Saifuddin is the first bowling change for some medium pace and it is much more to Bairstow's liking, with two thumping straight drives to the boundary. Fifty up for England.

This is really good batting. I think Shakib thought Roy was coming down the wicket so he fired it in but Roy picked the length quickly.

    Run-rate 5.14

Only three scores above 320 in one-day internationals at Sophia Gardens over the years, England's 342 against Australia last year the highest. A fluent cover drive to the fence is followed by another Roy boundary as Shakib drops short and the England opener is up to 0.

Mark Davies: Poor crowd today. No excuses really, Saturday game and it's dry.

Phil: Come on England! Nothing short of 380 on this pitch.

    Andy Zaltzman

Just 15 runs were scored off the first five overs and since the last World Cup in 49 matches at home that is the second slowest start England have made.

  9. Eng 26-0published at 6 overs

    Roy 21, Bairstow

It will go down in the book as Roy's second boundary but it is a fortuitous one off the inside edge. There is another boundary off Mortaza as Roy flips one from off stump through mid-wicket just to the right of Mustafizur, who does not extend himself fully as it were. The fielder looks sheepish, like someone leaving a wedding before the speeches to watch the Champions League final. Who would do such a thing?

Ian: Teams starting with spin against Roy & Bairstow is a good tactic as it's so far taken them out of their comfort zone & they look so tentative.

It is high class from Shakib Al Hasan. Three overs in the Powerplay against Bairstow and Roy and he is yet to be hit for a boundary.

  12. Eng 15-0published at 5 overs

    Roy 12, Bairstow 3

Shakib is fizzing them in around 56mph, quicker than many a bowler over the years who would say "I bowl a bit of medium-quick". Finally Roy gets one through the inner cover ring and he collects three.

I have only seen a few balls but if I was Bangladesh I would bowl all of the spinners. There is not a lot of pace in this pitch.

  14. Eng 9-0published at 4 overs

Trouble for Bairstow against Mortaza at 83mph and he is is already through the attempted clip to leg. It takes the leading edge but spoons so safety, before he gets off the mark to his ninth delivery with a pull for a single, off the bottom of the bat this time. How much of an effect will this gusting breeze have on proceedings?

Touts aplenty in Cardiff. As they shouted across the road to each other in an almost indecipherable language, I heard "two for an apple apiece". An apple core is a score, £20. Whether that's buying or selling, I've no idea.

I think England have to give themselves a chance to just get in on this pitch. Just have a look.

  18. Eng 7-0published at 3 overs

    Run-rate 2.33

Bangladesh pack the off-side to frustrate Roy and after a couple of mis-cued attempted big hits he settles for a more conventional push for a single. Just two conceded by Shakib in his opening two overs.

That short boundary does look very vulnerable with the seam bowler running into the wind.

  20. Eng 6-0published at 2 overs

    Roy 6, Bairstow 0

Captain Mortaza generously takes it upon himself to bowl into the wind from the River Taff End and it's over-pitched to allow Roy to drive, beautifully straight down the ground, for the first boundary of the match.
