  1. Afg 208-4published at 42 overs

    Target 398

Almost another wicket. Hashmatullah tries to flat-bat a slower ball from Chris Woakes. Mark Wood scrambles to try and get to the ball as it goes towards him at mid-off but he can't get there. It gets to Wood on the half-volley.

They're playing Sweet Caroline again at Old Trafford and the TV cameras zoom in on David 'Bumble' Lloyd in the stands. Give us a rendition, Bumble!

With 32 sixes, this is the most sixes in a World Cup match, and the third most in any one-day match.

Brilliant! He's smashed him miles! There's your record, Andy.

  4. 6 runs

    Afg 204-4published at 41 overs

    Target 398

What a way to start! Mohammad Nabi clobbers his first ball for six.

One man attempts to catch the ball in the stands and ends up tumbling into the plastic chairs to his left. That'll bruise.

Perfect time for Afghanistan's best batsman to come out. Just the 202 more runs needed!

    Good luck, Mohammad Nabi.

Lovely knock and a lovely ball to get him out. It just brushed the face of the bat and went straight to Joe Root.

  7. wicket

    Afghan c Root b Rashid 44 (Afg 198-4)

Another confidence booster for Adil Rashid. He breaks this troublesome partnership with a classic leg-spinner's dismissal. He lobs it up, lets the ball dip in, finds some spin and the ball flicks the edge before going to first slip.

    Tidy.

  8. How's stat?!published at 17:24 British Summer Time 18 June 2019

Jonny Bairstow now has two dropped catches at this World Cup, both in this game. Only one fielder has more - Pakistan's Asif Ali, who has dropped four.

  9. Afg 196-3published at 40 overs

Required run-rate: 20.2 runs per over

James Vince gets a nice clap from Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan and most of Old Trafford after a diving stop backward point.

Disappointingly he missed out with the bat again earlier. That should make him feel a little better.

Three dots in a row from Chris Woakes. Hashmatullah gets a bit giddy and tries to swipe the ball to the football ground but misses.

This is Afghanistan's highest partnership in World Cup cricket.

  13. Afg 194-3published at 39 overs

Need 204 more runs to win

Hashmatullah's confidence grows even further as he gets out the reverse sweep to Adil Rashid. It would have been four but for a good dive from Jonny Bairstow.

Hashmatullah has batted really well for his 62 today...

This is great long-term strategy from England. Give Afghanistan some confidence with the bat before they face India on Saturday.

If England had only got 310, 320, people would be biting their nails about now. England might look at their tactics and maybe question those. From an Afghanistan point of view, they most improve their fielding going forward as it it, quite frankly, below par for a World Cup team.

  16. Afg 188-3published at 38 overs

Joe Root continues to hobble around a little and grimace in the field. He had some treatment for his bad back earlier.

Afghanistan have India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies still to play in this tournament.

Many predicted them to cause an upset or two over the course of this World Cup. Will this batting performance give them some confidence to win one of their remaining fixtures?

  17. Postpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 18 June 2019

Afghanistan should be four down. Jonny Bairstow should have taken this, shouldn't he?

Patrick Brennan: Rashid is turning (no pun intended) into a real problem for England. No control, very few wickets... Without him the attack is a bit samey.

Julian Lock: If England bowl and field as badly as this they will have NO chance of winning the World Cup.

Jofra Archer couldn't find the breakthrough. Eoin Morgan is now turning to Chris Woakes.
