More from Virat Kohli: "This game was important for us. It didn’t go as planned. When things don’t go your way you need to show character and bounce back. That showed the character of our team. We can take lot of heart from this win and take the confidence forward."
But then Mohammed Shami ended a wonderful game in fitting style with a hat-trick.
But then a Mohammad Nabi six kept things interesting...
Rashid Khan also got out when looking set.
Asghar Afghan went for a big hoick but fell to Chahal as the tension began to mount.
India lost a review for LBW against Hazratullah very early on.
Gulbadin
Skipper Gulbadin got the run chase off to a good start.
Virat Kohli on Bumrah: "It is simple. We want to use him smartly when conditions allow us. He is a bowler who can do damage at any stage.
"In the end the communication was to finish him at 49 overs, so Shami had enough runs in the 50th over. The plan worked today. All in all the bowling performance was outstanding.”
Afghanistan's bowlers finished strongly to then chase 225.
But just as a century looked inevitable...
Virat Kohli was in sublime form, and looked to be batting on a different wicket to everyone else at times.
India captain Virat Kohli: "[The win is] right up there. We have been playing really good cricket and when you win toss you expect to get runs on the board. Then you see the pitch is slowing down, so we thought 250 was par and 270 would have been an outstanding effort. A team like Afghanistan doesn’t let you play how you want to play.
“At the halfway mark we had some doubts in our mind but everyone had belief in the changing room."

Jas Ghata-Aura: Bowlers have got India out of jail there
Toby Hunt: A crying shame, superb effort by the Afghan team though! @imVkohli, external is an exceptional captain, always getting the best out his players.
Right. Phew. And breathe.
That was lively, wasn't it?
Let's take a look back at some of the highlights of a great match, starting with the day's first wicket.
Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib: "We bowled really well. We did well in batting, credit to Bumrah for how he bowled in the last two or three overs.
"The total was not that much but in the middle you need 80s or 100s. 30 or 25s are not enough. If you chase 250 then middle order batsmen should go longer and take responsibility."

It is a great learning curve for Afghanistan they can take a lot out of it.
BBC Test Match Special
BBC Afghanistan correspondent Emal Pasarly: "I am emotional but it was a great game. All of the Afghanistan fans wanted the team to fight and they did fight today. That is the main thing.
"Afghanistan will get a lot out of this game. If they can take this to the Bangladesh game it will be even closer."

You can see what it has meant to the Indian players. They were odds on favouites by a country mile. Going into the last over we didn't know who was going to win, India didn't know who was going to win.
As the last wicket fell all of their players came together.
What a game of cricket.
It is great to see the Indian crowd not only give their team a standing ovation but the Afghanistan team as well.
