  2. SL 36-1published at 5 overs

Excellent running from Kusal Perera adds a sneaky single to the total, before Avishka Fernando sends a gorgeous straight drive back down the ground for four. Shot!

That is an overly aggressive shot on a pitch that is still doing a little. You can't play big expansive drives on a pitch like this.

  4. SL 30-1published at 4.3 overs

    Oh!

This has beaten everybody. Kagiso Rabada gets some movement back in to Avishka Fernando and he has a real loose waft of a drive at it. It cuts him in half and somehow misses bat, stumps, and a diving Quinton de Kock to roll away for four byes.

Is it weird that I completely agree with BOTH Jonny Bairstow and Michael Vaughan?

  6. SL 26-1published at 4 overs

Tidier from Chris Morris, with Sri Lanka nurdling a couple of singles here and there, and Avishka Fernando ends the over with a wild swish at a wide delivery.

I am little surprised that Faf du Plessis decided to field first. Playing Sri Lanka it is their way to go - bat and try and defend a score. Perhaps South Africa are hiding away from what has been a woeful showing with the bat.

  8. SL 24-1published at 3.1 overs

    Four!

It's wide from Chris Morris and Kusal Perera frees his arms, slicing a drive over deep point for a one-bounce boundary. Lovely stuff.

  9. SL 20-1published at 3 overs

Dot, dot, dot ends the over.

Avishka Fernando really is good to watch.

  11. SL 20-1published at 2.3 overs

Airy from Avishka Fernando, pulling at a Kagiso Rabada short ball, and he toe-ends it away for a couple of runs.

Avishka plays and misses on the drive but he unfurls a beauty to the next ball, standing tall and gliding it beautifully away through the off side for four.

Perera likes it wide. South Africa will know all about him. He goes after just about everything. He is a little Jayasuriya. He was his hero.

  13. SL 14-1published at 2 overs

At the other end, it's Chris Morris, and he has Avishka fiddling at an off stump tempter first up.

Kusal Perera aims a thumping pull down the ground and misses, and the ball trickles off the under edge to Quinton de Kock. Oh, he's nailed this cut shot, though. Four!

We were just chatting about this - Jonny Bairstow always seems to perform when he's been fired up by something. Remember the ton he made in Sri Lanka after he'd been dropped for Ben Foakes?

I think he's wrong in what he's saying but if this inspires him to go out and smash a ton on Sunday, then I'm all for it...

Not sure I completely agree with Vaughan. England can be a very pessimistic nation when it comes to sport. England are not out and there are some good teams in this World Cup, as well as other teams coming into form. They need support, not negativity. I also think they were too hyped as being the number one team in the world because everyone knows the ICC rankings can only be a rough guide.

A nice, quiet first over, then...

That is a big wicket first because Karunaratne is the captain but he sets the tone at the top of the order and is a nice foil for Kusal Perera.

  18. SL 3-1published at 0.3 overs

Short from Kagiso Rabada and Avishka Fernando cracks it off the back foot to get the first runs of the innings.
