Ryan Patel is a proper talent and played the sort of innings that makes you sit up and take note in Championship cricket.

His maiden first-class hundred was unbeaten, having started yesterday morning, and it spanned 278 deliveries.

He was the glue that held the Surrey innings together and gave the bowlers a platform to work with, and Tom Curran and Morne Morkel obliged by getting rid of Alistair Cook and Nick Browne to leave the visitors 21-2 at lunch.

  3. Young pair keep Notts at baypublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

    Nottinghamshire 263 v Somerset 174-3 - lunch

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Somerset moved closer to parity on the second morning against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, with both Tom Abell and George Bartlett passing fifty. Abell has moved on to 59, whilst his younger partner is unbeaten on 66.

Resuming from their overnight score of 74-3, Abell and Bartlett enjoyed a trouble-free opening hour as Notts rotated their five seamers.

On a wicket that appeared to have lost some of its pace, Abell reached his half-century from 105 balls, with Bartlett following from only 96. Each had hit five boundaries at that stage as the stand went into three figures.

The session produced exactly 100 runs and by the interval the west country side had moved to within 89 of the Nottinghamshire first innings score.

  4. Berg spell boosts Hampshirepublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

    Yorkshire 413-5 v Hampshire - lunch

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

Yorkshire added 113 runs in the morning session for the loss of two wickets scoring at just over 3.5 an over.

Gareth Berg, who has found wickets hard to come by early season, produced a fine spell of 2-14, accounting for Gary Ballance, who gloved a lifting delivery to keeper, and the stubborn Steven Patterson caught driving to point.

Berg found something in the wicket that we had not seen much of, a bit of bounce and movement off the seam, but either side of that spell, it's been the same lifeless, paceless surface.

  5. Reece makes early breakthroughpublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

    Derbyshire 291 v Gloucestershire 26-1 - lunch

    Dave Fletcher
    BBC Radio Derby Sport

Luis Reece picked up career-best figured of 7-20 when Derbyshire played Gloucestershire in the final game of last season and struck again this morning.

He had Miles Hammond caught by Wayne Madsen at first slip in his first over as Gloucestershire reached 26-1 at lunch, with Chris Dent on 10 and James Bracey eight.

Earlier, Derbyshire were bowled out for 291 in their first innings after adding 35 runs to their overnight score with Matt Taylor and Ryan Higgins finishing with three wickets each.

Until the last ball - when he makes use of a bit more width to cut to point for two.

One more run added by Hameed off Harris at the other end - and that's lunch at Lord's.

A solid opening stand for Lancashire, who trail by only 177 with all ten wickets in hand.

  8. Lunch at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

    Notts 263 v Somerset 174-3

Stuart Broad to bowl the last over before the break at Trent Bridge.

He drops short outside the off and Tom Abell sways out of harm's way.

He takes a single more off a thick edge than the middle off the last ball to move to 59.

George Bartlett has 66. That's lunch and a good morning's work for the visitors.

  9. Yorkshire in chargepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

Morne Morkel traps him in front of all three and he has to go for just 9.

Great start by the Surrey bowlers and they have the visitors on the rack early in this innings.

If we learned anything from this wicket yesterday, it's the fact you have to dig in and graft to get runs on it

But having dismissed Durham for 224 this morning, Sussex seem to have decided the best policy is to attack.

However it got Phil Salt nowhere. He tried to take on every delivery from Chris Rushworth in the opening over. You don't do that and he paid the price, caught in the slips on two.

With plenty of seam movement Tom Haines (22) and Stiaan Van Zyl (1) also fell to slip catches from the Durham skipper Cameron Bancroft, while Laurie Evans has just fallen for 10, bottom-edging an attempted pull of James Weighell straight onto his middle stump.

Ben Brown has now gone for his third consecutive duck, leg before to Weighell.

Durham had one key partnership of 93 yesterday. Where will the Sussex equivalent come from?

  16. Cook into double figurespublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

Alastair Cook and Nick Browne battling away for Essex against the new ball and some probing Surrey bowling by Morne Morkel and Tom Curran.

Cook on to 11 already as this pair look to reach lunch unscathed.

  17. Durham on hot streak with ballpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 12 April 2019

    Durham 224 v Sussex 49-4

Durham's bowlers are enjoying the conditions at Chester-le-Street it seems.

Sussex's reply to their 224 in a bit of strife at 49-4 after Phil Salt, Tom Haines, Stiann van Zyl and Laurie Evans all came and went cheaply for the visitors.

James Weighell with two of those four wickets.

Maximum batting bonus points for the visitors here earlier on in this morning session at Edgbaston, with overs to spare too.

Ollie Robinson continues to show a mature temperament as the 20-year-old makes a maiden first-class century.

The Bears are now finding better areas after some loose early morning deliveries that were dispatched for four by Robinson and Darren Stevens, who shouldered arms to Henry Brookes to depart lbw.

Harry Podmore was dropped by Dom Sibley at second slip on 1, but the missed chance did not prove costly.
