Peter Siddle underlined his value to Essex with an unbeaten 41 to add to his six-wicket haul in the Surrey first innings.
That has helped establish a useful 53-run lead for Essex and although the draw is firm favourite, the visitors do at least have an opportunity to put the champions under pressure in this final session.
Essex have a good recent away record against Surrey and can now push for three or four wickets this evening to set up a victory chance.
It would be no surprise if Siddle is the key man again.
