  1. Signing offpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 1 September 2019

After a brief lifespan of four years, the Women's Super League comes to a fitting end as a high-class innings by England captain Heather Knight steers Western Storm to their second title.

It looked like Southern Vipers had done enough to win the final, but Knight's well-paced innings, aided and abetted by Deepti Sharma, saw the Storm home with six balls to spare.

Several young players acquitted themselves well on the big stage and next summer they can look to The Hundred to offer them further opportunities on the big stage.

We will be back with text commentary coverage on this week's T20 Blast quarter-finals.

Until then, thanks for your company - and congratulations to Western Storm.

  2. Bigger total was in sight - Beaumontpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 1 September 2019

Western Storm beat Southern Vipers buy six wickets

Southern Vipers skipper Tammy Beaumont Told Sky Sports:

"Right now I'm pretty gutted but I'd probably have taken getting to the final and having a good game.

"When Danni and I were going really well we could have got up close to 200, but that's cricket, there's always a turn in it.

"The young girls are really stepping up on this stage and it's great to see them get the opportunities the KSL has given them."

    Southern Vipers 172-7 v Western Storm 174-4

Southern Vipers opener Danni Wyatt finished on the losing side in the Super League final but was named player of the tournament for her 466 runs, including her 73 off 42 ball in the final.

She said: "We were about 10 or 20 runs short there but credit to Heather and Western Storm, they played excellently today.

"It's a shame that's the last of the KSL but we've got the 100-ball competition coming up which is really exciting."

Western Storm captain Heather Knight told Sky Sports:

"It looked like the game was getting away from us but the girls showed fight and a never-say-die attitude.

"The KSL deserves that final, to finish four years on a great game of cricket."

"The first year of the KSL, it was very much an amateur competition - we were scrambling for accommodation. But it's come so far. It's really grown.

"It's a bittersweet moment to see the KSL go and the Western Storm brand and team go, but I'm also excited for next year."

  5. Knight rises to occasionpublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 1 September 2019

It's been a difficult summer for Western Storm skipper Heather Knight, with England beaten by Australia in the Ashes series, quickly followed by head coach Mark Robinson's departure.

Her own form in the Super League was mixed, with three half-centuries in the group stage, but her team's form was superb with nine wins from 10 games, and she rose to the occasion when it counted as her superb 78 not out made them the first - and only - two-time champions.

    • 2016: Southern Vipers

    • 2018: Surrey Stars
    • 2019: Western Storm
  7. WESTERN STORM BEAT SOUTHERN VIPERS BY 6 WICKETSpublished at 19 overs
    Breaking

    Southern Vipers 172-7 v Western Storm 174-4

Southern Vipers turn to the international experience of Suzie Bates for the penultimate over.

Deepti Sharma shows scant regard as she slogs her first delivery over mid-wicket for four, but is almost undone by a perfect yorker next up and just manages to get her bat down on it in time.

Sharma then gives herself room to loft the ball away over cover for another four - and one more decent hit will settle it.

That decent hit comes, appropriately, from Storm skipper Heather Knight who hits Bates back over her head to win the game with an over to spare.

Knight finishes 78 not out, with Sharma contributing 39 off 22 balls to an unbroken stand of 71.

  8. Storm 161-4 (target 173)published at 18 overs

    Knight 74, Sharma 30

This Western Storm innings has largely been about Heather Knight - but that contribution from Deepti Sharma could win the title.

First a fine sweep goes for four before she finds another boundary straight down the ground.

Storm need 12 runs from 12 balls after an expensive Danni Wyatt over - Suzie Bates to bowl the penultimate over for Southern Vipers.

  9. Storm 150-4 (target 173)published at 17 overs

    Knight 73, Sharma 21

Heather Knight's composure in this situation is just as important as her batting ability.

There is no sign of anxiety on the part of the Western Storm and England skipper.

She is content to keep rotating the strike and wait for the right ball to attack.

Partner Deepti Sharma has a moment of luck as she exposes her stumps and the ball just clears them as she tries in vain to swing Amanda Wellington away over square leg.

  10. Storm 144-4 (target 173)published at 16 overs

    Knight 69, Sharma 19

This is a big test for Lauren Bell, who comes in for her final over with five remaining.

She gets away with a loosener as Deepti Sharma glances straight to the fielder on the rope at fine leg.

No such luck from the next delivery as Heather Knight goes up and over the covers for a magnificent six, and Bell is then guilty of another no-ball, which is followed by a wide.

Those are free runs Southern Vipers cannot afford - and Sharma ends the over by slashing through point for four. Storm needed 30 from four overs.

  12. Storm 127-4 (target 173)published at 15 overs

    Knight 60, Sharma 13

A poor delivery by Suzie Bates is pulled away for six by Heather Knight.

A series of singles follow and 11 off the over is a good return as the runs required total comes down below 50.

  13. Storm 116-4 (target 173)published at 14 overs

    Knight 51, Sharma 11

Deepti Sharma looks like she means business and four off Fi Morris boosts the Storm total as the game comes down to the final six overs.

  14. 50 runs

for Heather Knightpublished at 13.3 overs

    Western Storm 110-4 (target 173)

A push to mid-wicket takes Heather Knight to 50 off 38 balls, but she doesn't risk a second run to Danni Wyatt.

  15. Storm 108-4 (target 173)published at 13 overs

    Knight 49, Sharma 5

Deepti Sharma is off the mark with a boundary, but Heather Knight can't find the single she needs to complete her half-century as Amanda Wellington's final delivery finds a leading edge, which is easily fielded in the covers.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.3 overs

    Luff c Rudd b Wellington 0 (Storm 103-4)

You'd be hard pushed to say that's good bowling by Amanda Wellington but she won't care.

The spinner directs one down the leg-side and Sophie Luff attempts a sweep without being properly balanced and gloves through to the keeper, who takes it at the second attempt.

  17. 6 runs

    Storm 98-3 (target 173)published at 12 overs

    Knight 44, Luff 0

Great technique by Heather Knight, who sweeps Tash Farrant away over square leg for the first maximum of the innings. While she is out there, Western Storm are still in with a fighting chance, and she pinches a quick single to end the over and keep the strike. The required rate is now 9.375.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.1 overs

    Wilson c Wyatt b Farrant 18 (Storm 90-3)

As we said earlier, if you're going to hit it in the air, make sure it doesn't go anywhere within sprinting distance of Danni Wyatt.

In fact, she doesn't have to sprint this time as Fran Wilson goes for a big hit off Tash Farrant but gets it too high on the bat.

That's a disappointing end to a stand of 40 with Heather Knight.

  19. 'Great running from these two'published at 18:12 British Summer Time 1 September 2019

    Isabelle Westbury
Cricket writer and ex-Middlesex captain on BBC 5 Live Sports Extra

There's been some good running from these two, as always.

They both grew up in the West Country and have been playing together for yonks, which helps.

  20. Storm 90-2 (target 173)published at 11 overs

    Knight 37, Wilson 18

Suzie Bates returns and Heather Knight powers her first ball over cover for four.

Bates' face has a rueful look as a miscue by Fran Wilson falls just inches short of giving her a return catch.

There are plenty of smiles in the Western Storm dugout - and they'll be even wider after Knight drives superbly for another boundary to end a productive over.
