Aleem Dar is usually a good barometer of things. He doesn't like rain. He usually goes running off. He's taken his hat off, which is critical for his rain test. Steve Smith is off the ground but the slip fielders aren't even moving.

    The batsmen have run off.

    England have stayed out.

    Here comes the hover cover.

But it's not really raining any more.

  3. Aus 168-8published at 55.5 overs

You know you all made the joke about how Jack Leach should open the batting for England?

Peter Siddle has a shout of opening the batting for Australia.

His technique looks better than Cameron Bancroft's, getting on the front foot to drive Stuart Broad through the covers for four.

  4. Aus 163-8published at 55 overs

    Smith 66, Siddle 16

Peter Siddle sees out the rest of the over fairly easily.

Re booing of Steve Smith and the other sand-paperers. I don't mind it when he's coming out to bat or if he's given out. That feels like pantomime theatre of the Ashes and almost a mark of respect. But booing when they reach a landmark doesn't feel like that, it feels mean spirited and will only stoke ill feeling between the two countries.

  6. Aus 163-8published at 54.1 overs

Peter Siddle isn't just hanging around, he's playing some shots too.

Chris Woakes strays onto the pads and Siddle crisply flicks it away through mid-wicket for four.

    Bad ball, great shot.

This is becoming a little infuriating for England. Steve Smith has found a pal in Peter Siddle who will hang around with him.

  8. Aus 159-8published at 54 overs

Peter Siddle drives firmly through the covers, the ball holds up before the boundary and Joe Denly fires in an accurate throw that limits Siddle to two.

Stuart Broad then draws Siddle into a thick outside edge, Ben Stokes makes a diving half-stop in the slips and the Aussie bowler scurries another couple.

Siddle then slices the last ball of the over out to third man and takes a single to keep the strike.

From England's perspective, that wasn't a bad extra rest. They've been able to put their feet up and have another cup of tea.

  10. Aus 154-8published at 53.1 overs

    Smith 66, Siddle 7

Peter Siddle taps the first ball after tea (and a rain delay) towards point for no run.

The players are back out on the pitch at Edgbaston and some rays of sun have returned as well.

Stuart Broad to bowl first after the interval. Australia will resume on 154-8.

Can England pick up these last two wickets quickly or will Steve Smith drag his side up towards 200?

Michael Mason: Considering crowd treatment of Broad in Australia for something trivial, a bit of booing for Smith and Warner is more than justified.

No overs have been lost so far, but that rain has meant the close of play is now 18:20 BST. Play can continue until 18:50 to make up the overs.

There is a lot of surprise and disappointment from former players, pundits and a few Australian journalists I've spoken to that Steve Smith is getting booed even when he reaches 50 or 100, as he did in the World Cup warm-up match in Southampton.

And I'm not saying I endorse the booing at all, but I think they fail to appreciate what Kieron is saying there.

Bound up in the boos directed at Smith is latent anger at previous Australia sides, whose dominance over England was respected but their behaviour meant they won few friends here.

Re Iain in London, I started watching England from 1990ish and grew up with Australia humiliating, bullying, smashing England and the 'banter' that went with it. So no, I don't feel sorry for Smith - he's world class but has to deal with it. Captains don't have to be 'Alpha', they can lead by example.

Steve Smith remains unbeaten on 66, prompting plenty of debate over whether it is wrong to boo him and should the fans be showing more respect.

Peter Siddle will try to stick around and perhaps hit a few shots like these when the final session does get under way...
