A good session for lbw dismissals. Not a great session for the umpires - James Pattinson would've been not out had he reviewed this one...

...but then again Pat Cummins was very, very out, shouldering arms to Ben Stokes' in-ducker...

There are not 15 worse shots than this one that Tim Paine played to fall for just five...

Oh, rubbish. That will mean a delayed start to the final session.

Raining heavily now. Big covers coming on.

England were briefly in dreamland when Steve Smith was given out lbw, only to overturn it on review.

But Chris Woakes then produced a jaffa to remove Matthew Wade, England making good use of the review system...

After slipping to 35-3 early on, Australia rebuilt through Steve Smith and Travis Head to reach lunch at 83-3.

England fans were a touch nervous, especially with Jimmy Anderson heading off for a scan on a calf injury.

    Enter Chris Woakes...

    Thanks Matt.

Ashes cricket is SO SO GOOD.

Let's have a look back at that session.

There's nothing like Ashes cricket is there? That was a seriously entertaining two hours.

Jack Skelton is here to take over from me.

England are in front, you'd have to say. The pitch has done a little bit, there's been swing and seam, but not masses. The umpiring hasn't been great. But England know they have a long day to go in terms of winning day one - and I'm sure they'll have to bat today, in conditions that are great for bowling.

Spots of rain falling at Edgbaston.

  11. Tea - Aus 154-8published at 53 overs

Siddle nabs a single at the end of the over with rain just starting to fall.

The players wander off for tea.

That was certainly England's session with five wickets falling but Steve Smith is still keeping the Aussies in it despite some serious creaking from the other batsmen.

JD: Can't agree with Michael Vaughan that people should appreciate Steve Smith as a batsman after he tried to cheat fellow professionals out of their runs.

TheMattFinish: I don’t agree Mr Vaughan, a cheater will always cheat and it wouldn’t have been their first time, more first time caught in the act. The boos represent the feeling from the fans that they are lucky to be in the Test team in their first Test outings since being caught.

When the ball moves Chris Woakes is top class. He is left frustrated this time as the ball whistles past Siddle's bat.

The floodlights are on and that's helping the bowlers.

Chris Woakes is back for another burst on the stroke of tea.

    Smith 66, Siddle 6

An excellent way to make an early impression, Callum.

If Australia top order does manage to stick with Steve Smith in this series then England will be in trouble because he just doesn't look like getting out.

He just grinds on and on.

Callum Michael: First day of starting work as a doctor and a day of many inductions, informed a few people around me that my watch is linked to the BBC wicket alert. Amazing how many eyes moved to my wrist every time the screen flashed!

And Ben Stokes is hit for four by Steve Smith.

You won't find this in any textbook - the pulled bash I'll call it.

You just don't want Australia to sneak their way up to 180, 200. From what I've seen, this pitch is about 250 par.

The rain is staying away for now.
