  1. Aus 190-8published at 61 overs

    Smith 76, Siddle 33

Ben Stokes is going to try some short stuff...that never really seems to go well though.

And Steve Smith comfortably lifts one round the corner for four.

Stokes then pitches it up to Peter Siddle, but he jams his bat down on it and pushes it through third man for another four. Deft.

Now this is proper Test cricket. Strike rates under 50, England fans moaning and a bit of rain thrown in.

  4. Aus 179-8published at 60 overs

    Broad 18-4-55-4

Peter Siddle plays and misses at one from Stuart Broad down the corridor of uncertainty.

But the next is on the pads and Siddle flicks it round the corner for a couple.

The last slices away off a thick outside edge past point but nowhere near a fielder and Siddle gets the single.

Peter Siddle is a better driver of the ball than most of the Australia middle order, pass it on...

    These are frustrating runs.

  8. Aus 175-8published at 59 overs

    Smith 70, Siddle 24

Chris Woakes is still making this out of shape ball talk every now and then though. He hoops it in and Steve Smith just about taps it away for a single.

Again Peter Siddle drives for two.

Steve Smith actually did play and miss! A collectors item! Jot the time down...

  10. Aus 172-8published at 58.4 overs

Chris Woakes loops a scrambled seam delivery past Steve Smith's outside edge.

England aren't happy with the ball though and it does look a little out of shape, struggling to fit through the handcuff device.

The umpires wiggle it through the hoop in the end though and England have to keep on bowling with it.

I've given up assuming that there's any chance of Steve Smith being out ever again. Peter Siddle, meanwhile, looks like a right-handed Jack Leach.

    Andrew Samson

The fifty partnership came from 82 balls, with five fours.

  13. Aus 172-8published at 58 overs

    Smith 69, Siddle 22

Peter Siddle unfurls another decent drive for two to bring up the fifty partnership.

England just have to stay patient and keep it tight. This must be really annoying though.

Jonathan Dale: Smith encouraged/forced a junior player to cheat. In a sport where honesty and honour are considered even more integral than most. What he did was disgraceful. He's lucky to be playing at all and while I respect his abilities, he deserves all the abuse he gets.

Peter Siddle is playing with one of Geoffrey's sticks of rhubarb.

  16. Aus 169-8published at 57 overs

Steve Smith is happy to take a single whenever it's on offer now, trusting Peter Siddle to keep playing properly.

Oooft. Chris Woakes dupes Siddle with a slower ball last up and it just about evades the outside edge.

The hover cover is sent back.

And Smith and Siddle have to make their way back down the steps.

    All a bit odd.
