  1. Update from Hovepublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Middlesex 75 v Sussex 132-3

Play is now under way after a 15-minute delay following a brief shower.

Australian Alex Carey is still four runs short of a half-century for Sussex, while partner Luke Wells is 56 not out.

  2. wicket

WICKET Libby b Olivier 18published at 11:18 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Yorkshire 232 v Notts 66-2

Yorkshire have now removed both of the Notts openers who survived last night's evening session within twenty minutes of the start of the day's play.

Jake Libby thought he could hit a Duanne Olivier ball through the covers but only succeeds in finding the underside of his bat and uprooting his own leg stump.

Chris Nash and Joe Clarke are the new batsmen this morning and need to get some runs on the board while keeping their wickets intact.

  3. Sam Curran named in Ashes squadpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

Surrey's Sam Curran has been named in England's squad for the third Ashes test starting at Headingley on Thursday.

Curran, who was wicketless in his 16 overs against Hampshire yesterday, is expected to join-up with England after playing today and will be replaced for the final two days of the fixture.

Team-mates Rory Burns and Jason Roy are also named in England's squad.

  4. wicket

WICKET Rayner b Amir 5published at 11:16 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Kent 128-7 v Essex

    Mohammad AmirImage source, Rex

    WOW!!!

We thought the ball that removed Ollie Robinson yesterday was pretty special - but that one was possibly even better.

Ollie Rayner is totally flummoxed by a brilliant inswinging yorker by Mohammad Amir which knocks out his middle stump.

That's four wickets for the Pakistan paceman now, all of them bowled - what a shame he's decided this will be the last red-ball game of his career.

  5. Essex looking for wicketspublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Kent 128-6 v Essex

Mohammad Amir opens up for Essex at Canterbury and his first over costs two runs to Darren Stevens.

Sam Cook has the ball at the other end and he begins with a maiden to Ollie Rayner.

Essex will be hoping to pick up the four remaining wickets as quickly as possible and then try to bat Kent out of the game.

  6. wicket

WICKET Yates c van der Merwe b Brooks 141published at 11:07 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Warwicks 306-5 v Somerset

Jack Brook's first ball of the day brings a wicket for Somerset as Rob Yates spears a catch to gully.

He didn't really need to play at that, but it takes nothing away from a superb effort by the 19-year-old left-hander.

Yates batted for six hours and four minutes in total, faced 289 balls and hit 22 fours.

Michael Burgess is the new Bears batsman.

  7. Yates up and runningpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Warwicks 306-4 v Somerset

Rob Yates wastes no time in getting his score moving at Edgbaston as he takes a single from Craig Overton's first ball of the day to advance to 140 not out.

Tim Ambrose and Yates swap singles from the final two deliveries, but it's a tidy enough start by the Somerset and England pace bowler.

Warwickshire have 13 overs remaining to push on towards a fourth - and possibly fifth - batting point.

  8. wicket

WICKET Slater c Tattersall b Coad 29published at 11:02 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Yorkshire 232 v Notts 41-1

    Well that didn't take long!

First wicket of the day with the first ball of the day at Scarborough.

Ben Slater who made 29 yesterday doesn't add to his overnight total after being dismissed at the earliest possible opportunity by Ben Coad.

Not the start Notts would have wanted as they look to gain their first victory of the season.

  9. Start delayed at Hovepublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Middlesex 75 v Sussex 128-3

No play was possible before lunch on the opening day of Sussex's home game against Middlesex.

We're going to have another hold-up this morning - but thankfully it will only be a short one.

  10. Cook hails 'brilliant' Amirpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Kent 125-6 v Essex (match resumes 11:00)

    Mohammad AmirImage source, Rex Features

Essex's Sam Cook hailed team-mate Mohammad Amir as an "unbelievable performer" as the Pakistani marked his final first-class game with three wickets on the opening day against Kent.

Both seamers took three wickets, but Amir produced the moment of the day with a magnificent late inswinger which cleaned up Ollie Robinson.

He recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, and will focus exclusively on limited-overs cricket at the end of this game.

"His skill and pace is brilliant and it doesn't matter if the ball is soft, it still swings for him," Cook told the Essex website. "A couple of those balls were pretty special and hopefully he's got a few more left in the locker for us before he hands his boots in for red-ball cricket."

  11. Wood happy to 'set the tone'published at 10:52 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Yorkshire 232 v Notts 41-0 (match resumes at 11:00)

    Luke WoodImage source, Rex Features

Notts fast bowler Luke Wood enjoyed a day to remember against Yorkshire after scything through the top order to claim a five-wicket haul.

Wood took his five wickets in under 80 minutes, with ex-Notts player Will Fraine the final victim of the fruitful spell, which left Yorkshire reeling on 38-5.

"It's special to come in and get my first five-for in Championship cricket for Notts," Wood told BBC Radio Nottinghamshire.

"Our coach Peter Moores always says to me, 'try and set the tone'. That's what I do in T20 cricket. It was one of those days where things just go for you. They nick them, whereas sometimes they play and miss."

  13. Moeen shows class to Aussie visitorspublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Worcs 186 v Northants 140-3 (match resumes 11:00)

Moeen Ali has had a hard time of it so far this summer.

Left out of the England side as the World Cup reached its climax, his lack of action told when he returned to Test cricket, and he was dropped after two poor games against Ireland and Australia.

After being told he could take a break by Worcestershire, Moeen allowed himself just a couple of nights off before making himself available for this week's County Championship trip to Northampton.

He found a bit of form on Sunday, surviving a couple of dropped catches, as he made 42 while his fellow Pears were being crushed all around him in slumping to 31-6. But he went for 40 runs off 13 overs of off-spin, including one moon ball.

And then what did he find when he reported for breakfast at the team hotel this morning. He got spotted by a couple of Aussie tourists. But did he hide? Of course not.

"He stopped, chatted to them for all of five minutes and had his picture taken with them," said BBC Hereford & Worcester's Dave Bradley. "All at 8:15 in the morning. Top bloke."

  14. Yates' talent 'bubbles' overpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

Warwicks 303-4 v Somerset (match resumes at 11:00)

    Rob YatesImage source, Getty Images

Warwickshire's Rob Yates highlighted the precociousness of youth by describing his maiden first-day century against Somerset as "great fun".

The 19-year-old, tasked filling the number three role normally occupied by injured Ian Bell, will resume on 139 not out, having already batted for almost six hours against the side currently second in Division One.

"I was just in my little bubble. I've been telling myself just to play the ball and not the occasion," Yates told BBC WM.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr was generous in his praise of the left-hander, saying: "He played superbly, really applied himself, played what he had to and demonstrated how you need to play on this surface."

  15. Clarke 'rusty' despite five-forpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

    Hampshire 222-7 v Surrey (match resumes 11:00)

    Rikki ClarkeImage source, Getty Images

Surrey veteran Rikki Clarke reaped the benefits of having been given a few days off as he claimed 5-52 against Hampshire at The Oval.

The 37-year-old was in action for the first time since 8 August as he undermined Hampshire's hopes of a big first-innings total.

"I've had my feet up for the last few games, so it has been quite easy to hone the red-ball skills. It's nice to get the ball swinging," he told BBC Radio London.

"It came out nicely, although I'm a bit rusty. After losing the toss to have them seven down is a nice bonus. I suppose it's a good day."

  16. Weather prospectspublished at 10:36 British Summer Time 19 August 2019

We had a few rain delays and interruptions yesterday, but were hoping for a clear run today.

Here's BBC Weather's Simon King to dampen our ardour.

    Let's hope any hold-ups aren't lengthy ones.

It was advantage Essex in the Division One title race on the opening day of the latest round of County Championship games.

They reduced Kent to 125-6 in the 53 overs of play possible at Canterbury, while second-placed Somerset only managed four wickets in a full 96 against Warwickshire.

Bottom club Notts were inspired by a Luke Wood 'five-for' at Scarborough as they bowled out Yorkshire for 232, but the onus is now on their batsmen as they look for a first win of the season.

We have nine matches in total for you, so welcome to our coverage. Play is due to begin at 11:00.
