  1. NZ 7-0published at 1 over

Better from Stuart Broad, pitching it up, and he has a half-hearted lbw appeal against Tom Latham turned down. You can tell Broad doesn't think it's out because he's actually turned around to look at the umpire to ask the question.

Now then! A bit of a jag back from Broad, the ball nipping over the top of Latham's stumps, and Ollie Pope produces a terrific take to his right to stop it swinging away for byes.

This is an expensive first over. Stuart Broad has to get into a bit of rhythm here.

  3. NZ 7-0published at 0.3 overs

England are wearing black armbands out of respect for Chris Silverwood, who will fly home tomorrow after a family bereavment.

Stuart Broad finds the edge of Tom Latham's bat but it's played with soft hands, and Latham milks a couple through third man before clipping a glorious four off his pads.

On to the pads, and Jeet Raval clips the ball away for a single.

    We're off!

  9. Crawley to bat at sixpublished at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

Zak Crawley, speaking to Sky Sports: "I was with Jos in the gym yesterday when he did his back so I knew there was a chance I was going to play earlier in the day but I found out officially last night.

"Jos is real nice guy so it's a real shame for him. You get chances sometimes and this one is mine. I'm disappointed for Jos but I'm glad to make my debut.

"I'm definitely excited, nervous as well but there's some excitement.

"I'll bat at six. I've batted there in my first year in County Championship cricket, I should be alright there."

It's one thing to win the toss but now the bowlers have to step up to the plate and deliver. They might not rattle them out for 180, but if New Zealand are 250-8 at close they'll be quite happy with that. It's about bowling them out and then going big in their first innings for England, they've got to go above New Zealand's score.

If it swings this morning - which it generally does at Hamilton - and New Zealand are five down at lunch then yeah, this team makes sense.

Honestly? I don't like the look of it. I don't think it's properly balanced and it just feels very bits and pieces.

  16. 'History suggests it gets better to bat on'published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

England captain Joe Root on Test Match Special: "There's quite a lot of live grass, 16mm on there, and history here suggests it generally gets better to bat on. We've gone with five seamers because we think that's the best chance of taking 20 wickets. This morning is just about keeping it dead simple, it's a little bit tacky underfoot, we just need to not be too complicated with how we get about it and just keep it pretty simple."

On Ben Stokes fitness: "With Ben, he did alright last week and he pulled up well. With Ben you know he's always going to put his all in and with five seamers there will be no excuses for the bowlers not to put their all in every spell."

On Ollie Pope being wicketkeeper: "He's a very accomplished wicketkeeper and he'll be fine I'm sure."

  18. How's stat?!published at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Batting doesn't seem to improve at Hamilton as much as people think, certainly not compared to the rest of New Zealand. The average runs per wicket in the first innings is 31.9 runs per wicket, 36.6 runs per wicket in the second innings, 29.5 runs in the third innings and 30.9 runs in the fourth innings.

Those at the ground are suggesting that the pitch is dry.

You know, the sort of conditions where a spinner might come in handy late in the game...

  20. Postpublished at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2019

So England have gone in with no spinner, five seamers, a wicketkeeper who doesn't often keep wicket and a new number six.

    Hmm.
