What has felt inevitable for most of this day, from very early on, happens just before tea - Tom Latham reaches a century. It's been a fine innings.

Well batted. A brilliant hundred for Tom Latham.

He uses his feet to crunch a full toss down the ground for four. He reaches three figures from 159 balls. Top stuff.

    It's his 11th Test century.

Has anyone considered that in a half full, relaxed New Zealand ground during a game that isn't even in test championship, Archer might find it harder to pump himself up compared to a jam packed Ashes cauldron?

Skipper Joe Root will bowl what will probably be the final over before tea. Will Latham try and get his century before the break?

    Latham 96, Nicholls 5

Not the quickest over you'll see from Jofra Archer. He does take some limbering up.

That was a good piece of fielding but it might have hurt Burns - he does have a thumb problem on his right hand.

    NZ 168-3published at 52.1 overs

Jofra Archer is back for a final over before tea. Nicholls cuts behind square but Rory Burns dives to prevent it going for four. That has stung Burns. He injured a thumb in the last Test remember. I hope that hasn't hit the same area.

The clouds are beginning to build and the breeze is picking up. We were forecast some showers around 4pm.

  9. NZ 168-3published at 52 overs

    Latham 96, Nicholls 5

This will be a fine, fine hundred if Latham gets there. He's looked like reaching three figures since he was on about 30.

Expertly played. He did not look to hit that too hard.

  11. NZ 168-3published at 51.2 overs

Latham has been brilliant but England have helped him out. A ball on leg stump in the previous over and now one short and wide outside off. Four runs. He's now only four away from a ton.

Just the four from the over.

Nicholls unfurled that one. He waited, waited, waited and then smashed him through the off side.

I wonder whether Broad has to accept defeat with this round the wicket plan. It doesn't have the same threat when the ball isn't moving like it did in England in the summer. Nicholls drives him for four.

I'm surprised England haven't tried to attack Latham off a short ball a little more. I wonder whether they've missed a trick.

It's snack time here to try and get us through the night. How are you coping? Still with us?

It's felt, for a very long time today, that a Latham hundred is on the cards.

Into the nineties Tom Latham goes. He has not missed a thing off his pads today. Woakes needs to get his line right.

  19. NZ 156-3published at 49 overs

    Latham 88, Nicholls 1

It's gloomy but England can't get this ball to go off the straight. That's not helping Broad's plan.

  20. NZ 156-3published at 48.5 overs

    Yes. Yes you must, Benji.

The plan is clear from Broad to Nicholls. He's bowling full from round the cricket. It caused the Aussie left-handers so many problems in the summer.
