Stephen Chater: Fair enough Root is a handy bowler..but winning the toss, electing to field, picking 5 seamers and then finding yourself bowling before the end of the first session??

I understand that, I suppose, because the Joe Root and Chris Silverwood axis is relatively new and they'll want to get a win. It'll be a case of saying to the players "you've got us in this position, you can help us get out of this position" too.

I asked Joe Root that question yesterday and he said we're picking a team to win the Test.

Would there have been any thought to playing Matt Parkinson? It's a two-Test series and it's not part of the World Test Championships.
Anyway. Cricket. That's what we're here for. Have England picked the right team? It's a strange line-up with five seamers, no spinner, a wicketkeeper who hardly keeps wicket and an opener at six.
This smoke alarm testing isn't particularly high-tech either. It's a poke the roof with a long pole kinda job. It's not going too well.
Seddon Park does look like another lovely ground. Back here in Salford we've got two fellas testing the smoke alarms in the office above our heads. Just what you want at 00:30.

The banks at Seddon Park are well populated, with England fans possibly outnumbering the local supporters at the moment.
Plenty of Barmy Army T-shirts on show plus this rather snazzy cap
Could be a long night...

The last four times Tom Latham has scored half-centuries in Tests he has gone on to score over 150.
England fans. I have a stat to make you shudder as you read this in bed...
We're debating who is ahead after that first session. It's pretty close. I'd say, given the fact England inserted New Zealand, the Black Caps will be slightly happier to only be two down. It's tight though.
Jeremy Coney

I thought the bowling was adequate. Chris Woakes looked the most dangerous bowler, getting it to be nibble a bit. All in all it was a relatively tight-ish session but at the same time not threatening.
Thanks Amy.
Too right I am.
The bowler with the best name in world cricket has been picked by New Zealand in this match. Have I mentioned it before?
Right. Snack time.
Matt Henry will take you through to tea. And yes, he is going to make that joke...

New Zealand has the highest rate of teams being put in having loss the toss at 55%. Zimbabwe is the next highest with 37.9% with India by far the lowest at just eight per cent.
Off they go.
England have got New Zealand two wickets down but they'd have been wanting a couple more after winning the toss and bowling first...
NZ 86-2
Tom Latham celebrates lunch by pushing his way to a half-century!
A clipped two, helped by a mis-field from Zak Crawley, hurries Latham on to 50 from 87 balls. He's been in lovely touch.
That lbw shout was hitting the top of the stumps - umpire's call, I reckon.
